offensive back, defensive back or wide receiver ( other than Goodman) on the entire team who could judge the ball, had good hands and could return punts even just a a few yards ? You would think that they could have found one guy from all those players.
As easy as it might seem, I think you're underestimating the difficulty of a punt return. Catching the ball is just one element of the punt return. To have a good return, you need good blocking schemes and good execution of those schemes as well. ND didnt have those things during the year. We all saw what Floyd did in the champs sports bowl. He had some fair catches during the year, but couldn't return any punts till the bowl game.
Finding someone, who can judge the ball, catch it, and return it, is worthless unless they have people blocking infront of them. And finding players to do the three things you list (judge, catch, and run) is difficult in itself considering the speed of game, weather factors, and the fact that 11 people are running full speed trying to tackle to tackle you.
mhernan6: I don't agree with your point. Goodman was the return man because they trusted him to catch the ball. Floyd could have possibly been used, but I doubt that they wanted to risk an injury to him. Therefore, it figures that no one else was was trusted to catch the ball consistantly and gain some yards after the catch. The result: They settled for the security
of someone who could be trusted to catch the ball.
Blocking was not the problem. If they had someone who could catch and run, the blocking would have been sufficient.
I am curious to see why they didn't stick Atkinson back there after showing his explosiveness on kick off return. I would like to see him get a chance at least.

Kelly should mix it up......give one of the younger guys a shot, let them all have a go in a game, I mean Goodman is the best at possession, maybe not speed but a good solid fielder, now you have guys like Atkinson or Riddick are more speed type players so surely there has to be someone that has the best of both worlds, and that would be the guy to have, maybe its one of these freshman coming in, maybe someone else on the team will step up and surprise us all, guess we will see....totally of course IMO

Whats funny is tha im pretty sure on the first FSU punt of the bowl game Michael Floyd returned it for more yards then the whose season combined, I might be wrong but at least it wasnt a fair catch!
I find it hard to believe they didnt use Floyd to avoid injury some of the best teams use their best players to return punts. I do think blocking was part of the problem, on several punts ND didnt block at all.
