Jeff Samardzija Critical of Shamrock Series Uniforms

  • This kind of surprised me a little given that "The Shark" didn't strike me as a conformist, but he does provide a different perspective that I'm sure many will agree with in this forum.

  • How can he judge something he hadn't seen yet?

This is just more ESPN garbage. Reiley calls us irrelevant and then they have a whole section of the front page dedicated to ND. They even had a 4 or 5 question poll on if ND is irrelevant. It's all a gimmick and I'm sure they spun the interview to make it sound worse than what he actually said.

  • Well they are just plain ugly but thats me. And im young, rich, good looking, and full of "swag" as the say. I would much rather wear a uniform that i know dozens of legends before me wore, even if it had small changes throughout the years. People dont like them but ill always be a fan of wearing the green one time a year maybe even more depending on how big a game is. This kinda takes a little bit away from the green IMO, a tradition I love.

  • Im surprised abit too Lou. He didnt strike me as a conformist either. But my thoughts here have mimicked what he said here. All this luring recruits via uniform and jumbotron gives me a head shaking 'whatever' as well. I dont much care if we put on Hefty garbage bags to play, as long as our counter looks crisp, our downfield passing game is tight, and our defense is stingy.

Once again you seem to have a problem with someone else's opinion. His opinion appears to fall in line with what quite a few people on this board have already posted. I'm also not sure how this is considered "more ESPN garbage". They asked him a question, he gave his answer. Keep in mind that he was interviewed by an ESPNChicago reporter, the regional page.

  • In a vacuum without consideration of any outside factors, i.e. tradition, what makes Notre Dame football identifiable, etc., I think the uniforms are okay and appreciate some of the effort and thought that went into the design.

But in reality, Samardzija is right. The uniforms have little to no impact on anything important, winning and recruiting included. The Shamrock Series uniforms are little more than a contrived effort to sell more shirts. How else do you get people to buy more of the same stuff they already have?

At least the throwback idea inspired some nostalgia. The Shamrock Series unis are just overkill for the sake of moving merchandise through the bookstore.

  • I'm still on the fence... And I'll reserve my judgement until I see them on the field in October.

I have no problem with anyones opinions.

Am I not allowed to wonder how he judged something he didn't see? Don't care what he or anyone else thinks about it, that's their right. And it's all a little strange that Reiley wrote the most hateful article of ND I've ever read and then all of a sudden ND is on the front pages of ESPN for days. The garbage is they are doing all this on purpose for ratings.

And we all fell for it. How many threads about Reiley were started and how many hits did ESPN.com get because of it?

  • I guess we are joining the GD fashionistas. Used to be you could identify teams right away, by the traditional uniforms, look etc. i'm not against making some subtle changes over time, just as the game itself does. But this is awful, and it proves our "taste" can be just as sour as any other tom, dick, or harry. SUCKS.......

That gives him the right to judge anything he wants..

  • He wasn't judging the actual design of the uni without seeing it. He admitted he had not seen the uniform and was questioning the reasoning behind the perceived "need" for a different uniform.

    dpfenny

  • I didn't think what Samardzjia said was terrible. He wasn't criticizing the specific uniform so much as the stepping out of character to grab some glitzy headline. His final word on the matter was, "Whatever", meaning 'who cares'?
Other than the dark blue background behind the leprechaun on the side of the helmet, it isn't that big a deal. It has stimulated some advance notoriety for the game, which is a good thing. I think there could have been a better designed unifiform but, conceptualy, I don't think the one game changeup is a bad thing.

  • Fact: I hate the "non-traditional" unis.

Fact: Recruits and the young men that play for ND love them.

    You decide.
