Jim Harbaugh

  • After his 49ers lost in overtime to the Giants, Harbaugh refused to be interviewed. The guy is a talented football coach, but couldn't be a more classless jerk.

the guy hates to lose. I can understand that. Plus he probably feels that he got screwed by the officials and would say something that will get him fined. Again, I can understand that.

I agree the guy is a gamer. It appears his punt return team may costed the game. I feel his pain. He's not obligated to field stupid ?s on the field anyway.

Everyone hates to lose, but it's part of the game, and the true greats find a way to do it with class and dignity. As for the refs, both sides could have lodged complaints. Having a passion for winning is exceptionally important, but so is the realization it's not always going to happen. I stand by my assessment of Harbaugh.

Regardless of whether or not he's required to be interviewed, sportsmanship would dictate that as being the proper thing to do. Can you imagine guys like Halas, Landry, Lombardi or Noll storming off the field in such a manner? Too many coaches and players have lost the decency which was evident in the personas of their forebearers, and it's a particularly unfortunate development.

  • Hell I'm the wrong one to comment on this thread. If the Irish lose I know for certain there will be at least one home furnishing destroyed and I don't talk to anyone for at least a few hours. SC was a couple days.

  • Anytime the media gets shut out from asking their idiotic questions I'm a happy guy.

People love that attitude when he wins....they hate it when he loses. I have no problem with it and it's one of the reasons his undermanned teams overachieve time and time again.

  • With 3 or 4 play run inside the 49er 20, a delay of game call, a TO, he had plaenty of time to prepare for the likely possibility of losing while remaining positive. Its not like he was Derek Dooley after the Tenn vs LSU game of a year ago. Point being that he could have mustered something up that conveyed his disappointment yet gave credit to the victors.

  • He's an interesting foil to big brother John. After the Thanksgiving Harbaugh battle, John spent at least 10 minutes hanging out with the media guys in the on-field booth... even has his kid out there with him answering questions. He seemed so personable and genuine. I've followed the Ravens since Zibby was drafted, and I continue to be impressed with them. Really wanted to see them win yesterday. I think Jim may have the coaching edge in terms of bringing the most out of less-talented players, but John almost matches that and also seems to have the more media- and fan-friendly personality.

Giants fan huh? The Giants should have been derailed and would've been if A. Kyle Williams wasn't fielding punts B. Goldson didn't knock out every CB going for picks.

  • In this day and age, interviewing is part of the job for a head coach. I think he is one heck of a coach in being able to get the most out of his players, but I also think he is a big a$$ crybaby when things aren't going his way.

His team had one heck of a year, and they played a great game last night, and to not take the opportunity on National Television to say how proud he is of them and how they played with heart all night long is a mistake on his part. You can say things in your own press conferences all you want, but those are only watched by your fans... he had a chance to say it to all football fans last night and he instead chose to go cry in the corner.

  • Their dad was a very fine coach who I imagine has a lot to do with these two fine coaches coming from the same family. My recollection of him is that John might be a bit more like him in this regard. I doubt John likes losing any more than Jim, but I sure prefer the way he deals with losing, and winning (see Jim H. after beating the Lions--and yes Schwartz did not handle it well).

I had a furious temper as a kid and but was taught to suck it up and be a good sport--or not play-- and that being a good sport was as much a part of competing as the competition itself.

There would be no NFL as we know it without the fans, millions of whom are kids who watch this stuff closely. If I still had a young kid at home, I would have given them a lecture about Jim H.'s behavior each of the few times I saw him this year. Is it the end of the world? No, but I think we overvalue talent to the exclusion of sportsmanship too often (including me).

  • Jimbo is a bipolar freak! Get it together coach!

49'ers are a nice team, with a stellar defense! Patrick Willis is like a young Ray Lewis (without the murder rap).

How did he get screwed by the refs? Especially when the Giants D-line was being held ALL day! I think it was poor QB play from Smith that really lost them the game. The whole 4th quarter and in OT he was driving the ball into the ground!

  • Screwed by the officials? Are you out of your mind?

The Giants got every bad call against them in the first half. Illegal contact on 3rd and 17? That was the worst call I have ever seen. A text book jam within 5 yards of the line or scrimmage.

Don't give me that. Harbaugh is a nut job. He has some screws loose and he is a child. He is undoubtedly a great football coach. But if you have the time rewatch the 2008 ND v Stanford game where he gets in a fight with Jimmy Clausen and has a temper tantrum on the sidelines. I don't see how a grown man acts like that.

As someone who is not a fan of either team, I agree that the calls absolutely favored the 49ers. Not in quantity, but it seemed in the second half like every penalty called against the Giants resulted in an automatic 1st down for the 49ers.

  • The coaches are mandated to attend a post game interview with the media (and he did attend).

The immediate interview with the losing team is a "emotional hook" by the covering network to the TV audience at home. It is purely done for ratings. Getting a coach that is crying or choked up on camera is about numbers.

Harbaugh apparently finds this redundant, since he has to do the post game interview anyway. It is his call and personally I have no issue.
