Josh Atkinson

  • what do you guys think about Josh Atkinson? i think he will be a solid player but ive been watching practices on und.com and he looks shaky out there wanting to see what you guys were thinking this year. We are thin at corner this year and i hope he can step up we need him to! go irish!

Pretty much what Coach Kelly said "It would be great if we could take Atkinson's speed and mix it with Lo Wood's technique." I am a big fan of Atkinson and thought he was an underrated member of the recruiting class but he still has a ways to go

  • I think he'll be a great player but it sounds like he is just not there quite yet. Lou's recent article on the CBs, based on an interview with Cooks, was really interesting. I did not realize how physical and aggressive Atkinson is. He'll be a great backup and successor to Bennett for sure, and it sounds like he is still in the mix to start at field corner this year. If I had to guess I'd say that Lo Wood will be the other starter though.

Last time I talked to Josh he told me that hitting people was the "family brand." Playing aggressive is in his genes. This video of George Atkinson, Jr. pretty much says it all...

  • It will probably be a mixed bag for Atkinson this year, but there's quite an upside with this kid. I'll have a feature story on him at some point this week, so be on the lookout.

ok thanks hes got to be able to come in and be effective right away im hoping the spring game will give a good look on how our secondary will be.

  • ndpalazotto9,

Of all the 15 practices during spring, coaches will consistently tell you that the Blue-Gold Game is usually the least productive and the one where you usually can get the worst read on a player (although Aaron Lynch was pretty darn impressive last year). The defenses are usually limited to one coverage, blitzing is verboten and the offense also will be fairly vanilla.

There is a reason why they keep the clock running in the game. It has a "get it over with" approach, although it never hurts to have competition in front of an audience. Just don't read too much into it. Two years ago, Nate Montana seemed like the reincarnate of his father while throwing three TD passes in the first half to three different receivers.

  • Wow, thanks for posting Dan! Although I've heard plenty about George Atkinson Jr. (I grew up in a family of Steeler fans), that's the first film I've seen on him since I was a kid. Amazing how much his boys look like him out on the field ... same body type and everything. I always heard that George Jr. was a big hitter so I assumed he was a bigger guy ... the video references that he was even smaller and more slightly built than his sons. Hope Josh grows into a DB of that caliber. I'll look forward to that story, Wes.
