  • Thank you Lou and a thanks from my Pop Don Doyle, 705th Tank Destroyers. Pop came ashore on Utah Beach in July 1944 so he missed the horrific day your post honors, but from that point on the 705th saw more than their share. They attached to the 101st and won a Presidential Unit Citation for their actions during the siege of Bastogne.

  • Angelo Bertelli is a guy who's life almost sounds like a John Ford movie. An amazing collection of America's own story from those years. How many guys won: The Heisman Trophy, The Bronze Star, a Purple Heart? and fought on Iwo Jima, and played in the NFL? A guy like that today would be President of the United States.
A foot note...He was one of my Dad's roommates.

My grandfather fought in the third wave of D-Day and will never forget those few days after. He is still alive today at 94 as well. He traveled to the WWII Memorial when it was unveiled about 6 or 7 years ago.

He was also given an award about 12 years ago by our congressman in the area Pete Hoekstra. That was a special day and he was very emotional. Even made the 6:00 local news here in Grand Rapids, MI.

My grandfather was there as well. On the wall at my grandmother's house is a picture of my grandfather with General Patton along with a handwritten letter from Patton. It sits right above the 2 silver stars and 2 bronze stars that my grandfather was awarded during that time.

The guy fights on the front lines of both the Korean War and WWII and cancer is the thing that he finally succumbed to 40+ yrs later. Go figure. At his funeral the White House sent an encased American Flag that was delivered by 2 Army dignitaries along with a letter from President Bush. Very proud moment for the entire family.

Never heard a single story about any of it from my grandfather, only from bits and pieces that my grandmother, aunt and uncles figured out from friends and guys my grandfather served with.

My Dad came in on the 23rd wave at Omaha. 16 years later in the summer of 1960,when I was 13, my Dad, Mom and I visited Omaha Beach and the cemetary that's above the beach - very beautiful day - very beautiful cemetary - remembered my Dad walking slowly past the graves of so many heros - lost in thought - unforgetable. When the movie Private Ryan(with its 20min Normandy scenes) came out I asked him if he wanted to see it - he replied "Once was enough".
