Kelly talks personnel

  • Kelly doesn't sound thrilled about the situation at the field cornerback spot yet. Here's what he had to say about top contenders Lo Wood and Josh Atkinson:

"They’re competing I think both of them are going to play. Both of them certainly are going to get an opportunity to show themselves in the spring game quite a bit because of our numbers there. But that’s all we got on campus. Both those guys are gong to play. They both have different skill sets. Josh has got great speed. Lo is a pretty technique-oriented player. If you could get Lo’s technique on Josh and put some speed on Lo you’d have the right guy there.

  • Cam McDaniel also got a very long look today at cornerback. He was out with the first group in nickel and dime situations for most of the day. He made a couple of nice plays during an 11-on-11 scrimmage at the end of practice. He doesn't fit the mold of Diaco's CBs, but Kelly seems pleased with what he's doing so far:

"We made a decision that he had to get more reps. He’s a tough physical player. If you watched our 'hard hat drill' He’s a guy that can run and hit and tackle as well. He’s a pretty athletic kid. He got a lot of film today so we’ll get some good evaluations."

  • We are in trouble at CB.

  • P.S. The Hard Hat Drill is a 1-on-1 drill that simulated running down on a kickoff and tackling the returner. It lead to a couple big hits Saturday and was a fun one to watch.

We'll have more from today's practice in a full report Sunday morning. In the meantime, if there are any burning personnel questions, feel free to fire at will...
