Lou Holtz & Tim Brown Share Heisman Spotlight

  • At the Heisman Trophy Gala Monday night in New York—where 2012 winner Johnny Manziel was feted—19 former Heisman winners were in attendance, including John Lattner, Paul Hornung, John Huarte and Tim Brown from Notre Dame. Former Irish coach Lou Holtz introduced Brown, saying, “My greatest accomplishment was to be able to coach Tim Brown. No one changed our team more than Tim did.” Said Holtz, “I was there in 1987 when Tim won it and I remember Jim Nantz from CBS interviewing me and asking me if I had ever thought abut winning the Heisman. I told him, sure, I would have been the first winner from Kent State, the first defensive player to win it and the first third-stringer to win.”

In his remarks on the 25th anniversary of his Heisman win in 1987, Brown said, “Notre Dame was the only school that recruited me that put education first. And my mother never wanted me to play football. She asked Gerry Faust if I could go to Notre Dame and be in the band. . . . My junioryear this 5-8 guy shows up as our new coach and he says, ‘What’s going on with you?’ After two days of practice he told me he thought I could be the best player in the country. After another two weeks I started thinking maybe I could be the best player in the country. And now I know it’s because of Lou Holtz that I won the Heisman.”
