Malik Zaire---Talent Recognition---Oh No!!!!

  • It appears from the first two days of the Nike Elite 11 (QBs) that once
again, BK and staff have found a real, real diamond in the rough in
Malik Zaire. Not that he wasn't highly thought of and respected prior
to his performances this weekend--he was. But, he is performing every
bit as good as Browne of USC fame and apparently better than Michigan's
Morris. Kevin Olsen (a Miami, Fla. commit) has come out of nowhere but
going into the weekend its Olsen, Browne, Zaire and Morris ranked in that
order by most of the Elite 11 pundits.

This really bodes well since the Elite 11 puts a premium on passing
and Malik brings a "dual-purpose" quality to the table in addition to
his rather spectacular passing skills. So, if you thought we have a
QB "quandry" this year, wait until Malik arrives on campus. We may
have an embarassment of QB riches like that school on the southern
    California coast.

    19BAG85,

Not that I know of but one of the things that seems to
be impressing the pundits is his footwork, apparently
he has the best footwork of everyone out there including
    Browne.

  • The only thing I have heard that concerns me is that he is described as "not very tall". We already have that issue with Golson. I am hoping he sprouts a bit this year

  • I thought Olsen was thought of pretty favorably...isn't he the youngest brother of the two other Olsen's who transferred from ND years ago (Greg the TE and forgot his brother the QB)

Yep, those would be the traitors. The QB was Chris.

  • How do I get downvoted for asking about his 40 time. For crying out loud I said I love him in the same sentence. And when his 40 time is listed at 5 seconds it's a bit of a concern.

I don't understand some of these down votes---I gave you an upvote to try to even things out.

  • Thanks for the update, Hemy. That's great news.

On the subject of the silly down voting, I got an up vote on another thread for essentially posting that my wife thinks I'm nuts. I'm not sure how to interpret that.

  • According to Will Biggins, the staff at the Elite 11 have listed their
standings after day 3: Nebraska commit Stanton is first, Malik is
hanging on to number three and USC commit Browne has slipped
to seventh. Maybe, just maybe (and perhaps prematurely) can
one say that Browne is "overrated."

And, by the way, Michigan's Morris appears to be outside the top
    eleven.

Strange what happens to those ratings and rankings when the
    rubber meets the road.

Of course, I trust I will not be eating crow as the weekend lumbers
    on.

  • What about that Greenlee kid that doesn't even have any offers but Fresno St.

I agree--he is in second place. To me, this whole thing is simply an illustration
that the star-system, while many times valid and predictive of talent, is often
flawed. During three days of intense competition, Malik Zaire has shown
that he is in the top tier of prep QBs. Yet, he is a 4 star and Browne
and Morris are 5 stars. And, Greenlee is a 3 star.

We could go on and on--the most important thing is that in Malik, we
have a real keeper and should be thankful we got him.

I'm thrilled we got him. Between him Kiel and Golson we will have QB debates for years to come. I think Greenlee will come away with some nice offers when all this is said and done

  • Watch his videos, he runs away from people when he gets an opening. 5.0 forty guys don't do that, not with the competition Kettering Alter plays. They again will be competing for a state championship, and their regular season schedule is outstanding. I would say 4.6 would be accurate, and outstanding for a qb -- I'll take Malik and his speed!

  • I watch ESPN Tom Luginbill's video on the Elite 11 after day 3.
He mentioned Malik first but cautioned everyone about his
height. So, it appears that as far as "performance" goes, Malik
is right there with the best of the best-----that's why I am suspicious
and critical of the star system as applied to Malik. His actual
on-field performance speaks volumes but he is downgraded
by the pundits because he does not possess "ideal" QB
    height.

So, now we know. The "pundits" believe he lacks ideal
height. He, of course, could be the second coming of
Joe Montana but still in all, he's only a 4 star since he's
not 6"3" like Browne or Morris. So it goes. I'll keep him
and I think Kelly will too.

Russel Wilson was short. And a pretty good QB too. I don't think his height will be an issue

  • IMO, from what I've seen of the evaluation process that Dilfer and his staff put these kids through it goes way beyond simple arm strength and throwing accuracy. They evaluate football intelligence, leadership capability, endurance, presence in the huddle, etc.
Personally I am sold on this Elite 11 deal. Kiel never came out of his shell and showed his leadership capability. He kind of kept to himself which I guess is just his personality.
