  • Did you guys watch college football live today i think may day is coming around he was giving us some love i was shocked they was talking about the orange bowl possibility and he was saying we deserve it with the following we have and how it will always be sold out i guess i can like him until we play pitt lol

  • He had more issues with Charlie Weis than anything else and he's been very favorable towards Coach Kelly and our future with him at the helm. If he was such a bad guy Lou would not consider him a close friend and invite him to things such as the Legends golf outing.

  • A lot of sports writers like Whitlock, May, and Wilbon were upset that Ty was the first ND coach not to be allowed to complete his first contract. They're all black and Ty was the first black coach so there were some accusations about racism. I don't know that any coach would have had a fair chance in their eyes so this could be part of the beef.

Or for those without conspiracy tendancies, maybe he didn't like Charlie for the same reasons a lot of people on this board didn't. Cold personality, not a developer of talent, underestimated jump to college, over paid, underperforming, etc.

  • I think Mark May doesnt like Notre Dame because the Irish never recruited him

  • Not sure about you guys, but I look forward to the barbs b/w May and Holtz more than anything else on game day (with maybe the only exception being our game). Even when the topic doesnt pertain to ND. May is excellent in his predictions and for his insight. Lou is just flat out hilarious. A great pair that I hope to see many more years out of.

  • Contrary to what they think, ESPN is more about entertainment than reporting. Mark May plays a character, I wouldn't take him too serious.

I agree I know off camera May and Holtz are pretty good friends. ESPN knows Holtz will never pick against the Irish unless they are playing his son so I think that's why May tries to root against the Irish.

  • As much as it burned me the reason May got under my skin is because he turned out to be right so often. I think he sees a different set of talent on Kelly's Irish and realizes it is a matter of time before they break out.

  • I never liked Mark May and never will. Its up to the Notre Dame football team to win and shut him up.

  • Reece Davis was just on Bill King talking about this. First off I honestly agree with Reece that neither May or Lou play a "character" It's what May sees in the games. Honestly you can't be mad at him for his analysts and call him a hater when he's turned out right more times then not

  • My problem with him is that he comes across to me as smug and taking himself way too seriously. Now maybe he is playing a part in a way and I would think he is a great guy if I met him one on one. That is very possible. He pontificates way too much for my taste so I try to avoid him.

Im with Reece, I dont think its a character, those two are just a natural entertainment fit. Their opinions dangerously flirt with disaster, but all three of them keep MM and LH from getting too close to the edge. Hate MM all you want for his "anti-ND", but lets face it, we're pissed because he has turned out to be right pretty much every time.

When he changes his tune(as he genuinely sees fit), we will be the FIRST ones happy with what he says, hoping it is a foreshadowing.

Good point. Mark May was saying ND was weak in the trenches, and that was their achilles heel especially during the late Ty and Weiss eras.
But the way that he said things about ND -- I will never get that out of my mind. I cannot watch him.

  • I've never had a problem with Mark May. In fact, it bothers me more that Lou Holtz is allowed to carry on the way he does. I think that does more damage than anything May has to say (which, as many of you have pointed out, has turned out to be true more often than not). It was refreshing, however, to hear May talk about the Irish in a more positive light the other day.
