Martin Assessing Irish QBs

New offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Chuck Martin on Wednesday announced his starting QB … but no one believes him.

  • Does it really matter who is named the starter for Navy? Recent history has shown us it only takes a half of mediocre QB play for it to change. Rees/Hendrix are the only QBs taking 1st team reps over halfway through the spring...I think that is telling.

My luck w/the Irish 18-6...GO IRISH!!!

  • Rees is going to be the starter because no one else can step up. Hendrix and Golson will probably get some run packages set up for them. Kiel will redshirt.

  • If Rees starts I will pull my hair out. Mobility and a strong are are key ingredients to the spread offense.

Kelly screwed up by making Rees the ONLY QB on the roster with considerable playing experience. Hendrix should have been playing a more advanced role ever since that Air Force game last season.

So that's what a one star post looks like.

  • Lmao

    Great Shane

  • Dear Coach Martin,

Who is this everyone fellow? It seems people seem to quote him quite a bit.

I for one don't know how you can count out a kid that is junior and has started for the past two season at Notre Dame. Despite his limitations he has led the Fighting Irish to some pretty good wins. Yeah, he has had his issues but don't most young qbs?

I would not be surprised if one of the other guys surpasses him up at some point but, you can never discount the experience that comes from leading your team on Saturday afternoon in Notre Dame Stadium for the past two seasons.

The four young men on scholarship to play qb at ND were recruited to be a starter. The probability of all 4 starting may be slim but, they all should be capable of leading the boys to victory.

Coach em all up, get them all ready and hopefully one or more of the boys will step up and lead the Fighting Irish to a national title(s). Anyway it happens it will just be nice to order more national championship gear to hang around the house and wear out in public here in Buckeye country.

    Onward to Victory

  • It is going to be a tuff year. With that being said find your QB!!!!! Put them all in and develope him now. If we lose someone this year or next so be it. The wins will come when we find a leader with the skill set. I believe he is with us now.

  • The quote saying we won't be great vs. Navy scares me. I would have said AH or EG had a good chance to start game one prior to that comment. I feel like it's Rees' job to lose now for better or worse. I feel we need someone that can be more effective running the ball. But in that case, the QB will be exposed to injuries often. We need 2-3 of these guys ready!

  • I've tried not to waste my time dissecting this since we can all agree it's not going to be decided until late summer camp. Also, similarly to what Daniel said, I can't see it not being Rees to open the season. The picture with the headline, he's standing closest to Kellly. He's getting or sharing the first team reps. He has the most experience. It's not going to be a popular choice, but I just see it happening the way it's going down. The slowing down of the concept is going to help the other guys level the field, but It's going to be like putting a calc student back into a long division class. In reality, with the coaches stressing not turning the ball over; all it's going to take is Rees showing he can throw the ball not to the wrong team. If he can do that and gain Kelly's already undying trust back he's there week 1.

Hopefully that is being planned for by using the "extended runs" with Atkinson, and Riddick taking swings, screens, slip screens, and jet sweeps to compensate for Rees' lack of wheels while Nichols provides a man-wall on the right side so Rees doesn't have to scramble or take heat. And of course Golson as a red-zone speed package QB until he's ready to take over full time. The article makes it seem like he's ready to overtake Hendrix in the trust department with the staff.

  • Thanks Lou for another good article….Don't know if we will ever get the QB question settled….I am truly more concerned about corner back than quarterback right now….lots of high expectations for our defense this coming fall….our defense will be the answer in handling a very difficult schedule this year!!!

    I couldn't agree more, dc.
