Matt Doherty Fired By SMU

  • Per CBSSports.com, former ND basketball coach Matt Doherty (1999-2000) was fired after six seasons with the SMU Mustangs. The AD for SMU is Steve Orsini, the special teams captain for the 1977 national champion Notre Dame football team.

Doherty was 80-109 in six seasons at SMU, 13-19 this past year. He had just one winning season at SMU, a 20-15 campaign in 2010-11 that resulted in an appearance in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. The Mustangs are making the jump to the Big East in all sports in 2013. According to CBSSports, Doherty has one year remaining on his contract and is expected to be bought out for $500,000.

Doherty left ND for his alma mater North Carolina, where he had a tumultuous three seasons (2000-03) before getting fired. He spent a season as the coach at Florida Atlantic before accepting the job at SMU. His career record is 169-178.

  • Leaving Notre Dame was the biggest mistake he ever made.

  • I don't disagree it was a mistake for him to leave ND. I think he was a good fit but UNC came calling and ND is better off.

  • This is absurd. He was an outrageous fit at Notre Dame -- and one of many mistakes by Pres. Malloy in his management of the University and its athletic program.

His sadistic direction of the basketball program -- see "304" in the annals of modern inferno.

Matt Doherty is a narcissitic fool who will not be hired again by any legitimate basketball program. He is rightfully consigned to the ashcan of failures.

  • I remember Matt Doherty as a high school kid on Long Island. He was a great power forward then and he went on to start 4 years for Dean Smith, winning a Nat'l Championship with Sam Perkins, James Worthy, Jimmy Black (who was an ND asst coach) and that other guy? Oh yea, Michael Jordan. I was ecstatic when ND hired him and disappointed when he left, but, I could understand going back to his alma mater. Almost instantly, alumni et al hated his attitude. He seemed to be an arrogant hot head, which was not his demeanor as a player or asst as far as I know. He was fired, more for his personality than his record. His tenure since then hasn't argued against that decision. It is hard to see a level below Florida Atlantic or SMU basketball. I am more surprised than sad. This is a guy from a great pedigree, going back to high school, and then a top asst job and a cameo Head job at ND. You would have thought he would have picked something of value up by now. He has been given opportunity and has ridden his UNC credentials as far as you can. I guess it's time to check out another career.

  • I think that is "Fr. Malloy."

The biggest mistake he ever made was trying to separate himself from the Smith/Guthridge legacy at UNC when he got there. It was surprising to see since he was an alum of the program, but, moving Coach Smith's and Guthridge's offices to the back corner hall of the Dean Dome and not reaching out to previous players did nothing but alienate him from boosters and fans that he needed on his side when he wasn't winning. He recruited every kid that Roy Williams won his first national title with too...a sad way to learn a lesson.

My luck w/the Irish 18-6...GO IRISH!!!

totally disagree on doherty. but what about hiring weber? there was also alot of crap under the sidelines at illinois that forced him out. if smu does'nt hire him, the AD should be fired.......
