Michigan twitterizing their turf

  • According to annarbor.com, the Wolverines plan on painting "#GOBLUE" on their turf during this month's spring game in an effort to market the hashtag commonly associated with the school. I can only imagine what type of pitchfork and torches reaction this would cause if Notre Dame made a similar decision.

  • I kind of get the hashtag advertisements on TV shows when they are attempting to create buzz and get new viewers, but I don't really see the point of this.

  • Seems dumb, UM is honestly not even close to the first school I think of when I think of the color blue.

I know the natural reaction is that anything new and related to social media will be an automatic eyebrow-raiser for recruits, but I'm not sure that's the case here. Yes, coaches need to be well versed in social media because that's where they can have a conversation with today's recruits. But, I don't think playing on a field with an extra pound sign floating around is going to get kids too jacked up. It won't have the same influence as things like the uniform craze that swept the country last fall.

  • I disagree dan, it will get the recruits excited because um is progressive and they will be tweeting that hash tag. Twiiter is like crack to these kids and this will only help it may not get someone to commit but it will get people talking and they may get an extra visit or two from guys that normally wouldnt have.

Exactly. I did not get it, but now I do. You should see how often current recruits send messages to prospects and members of their fellow class.

  • As much as we hate on U of M, this is current and a great idea. Notre Dame was [somehow] voted the #1 school in use of social media, though, so we're doing great things as well. U of M is one of the "cool" schools right now so ND should step it up a bit!

ND website and their use of video, etc is pretty good, but I'm not sure if they are #1. Shouldn't Stanford be #1?

Well said and I agree 100%. UM commits have used twitter exceptionally well for building bonds and recruiting other targets. Saw it last year and especially this year. Didn't see it from many of our recruits last year, but this years crop of commits are taking advantage of it. Of course the school, players, and coaches will always have a major impact with recruits. Once they leave that environment we have very little control/impact on what these kids are discussing. Having commits in their ear and on their mind doesn't go away. Wow, have the times have changed. I've heard a lot times regarding ND targets how high they are coming off a visit. If a player doesn't commit after visiting ND then the chance he commits decrease drastically. Now we are always on their mind thanks to commits using twitter, FB, and text messaging.

I know...you wouldn't usually think of ND as being cutting edge but USA Today somehow came to that conclusion...

That's probably part of the reason they're doing it. Michigan's AD, Dave Brandon, is all about branding. Former Corporate CEO. He's gone back to the classic block M instead of the split M. Now that Missouri is moving away from their M, Brandon is taking advantage. This is probably his attempt to co-opt the color blue.

Do you remember being a teenager and having something really cool? And then your parents started thinking that thing was really cool, but they didn't really understand how kids used it ... And then all of a sudden it didn't seem cool at all.

I understand Michigan is trying to be progressive and I'm sure that among fans the hashtag will create conversation (both good and bad). But, if this in fact a ploy to show recruits how cool they are, I don't think it will have the desired effect.
