Musing about Max

  • Im starting to wonder about Max. Just a week ago, I had Max at 95% Irish. The "blown away" comment from his Stanford visit stuck with me. Usually that very remark has a ...well...95% success rate. Now Im not so sure he wont fall into the 5% pile. Not necessarily because USC hit a HR with him this past weekend, but because of what wound up happening on Kelly's visit.

    Sure, Kelly and Denbrock had a chance to sit in the stands at his hoops game and talk to his parents and explain how important Max was and all about ND and its benefits. Yet to have such a diminished visit with a "sorry, I gotta go play a game, Coach" was less than thrilling. Seems very lukewarm to me. I am wondering if he is going to fall into the Bryce Treggs or John Theus category which will be "ND is a solid #2" and buyers remorse about leaving their home state is a primary factor.

    While we will figure out how to get along fine at Safety with some capable guys, boy I sure long for an Ed Reed. A tall, rangy, ballhawk back there. Either way, I hope it works out. :)

    Looking on the bright side ,I guess we could feel somewhat confident that he didnt commit to USC this past weekend.

  • Parents seem to want him closer to him. I suspect that is why the staff made it a point to visit with them, and the fact that Max had a bball game did not deter them from making him their first stop.

  • Definitely feeling pessimistic about landing Redfield. As mentioned elsewhere, it seems like the Amir Carlisle situation where the kid was ND material, understood ND, and just couldn't get over the hump and ended up at SC. Maybe Max will see the light a year earlier than Amir. Really surprising that Redfield was compelled to decommit, and while ND continued to win and SC fell further he never could make the decision to join ND. I think that he would have already committed to ND by now, and the pendulum has now swung back to SC. If the #1 ranking in the BCS, GSR, and a win at the Coliseum is not enough, I'm not sure what will.

    I believe he meant his ND visit for the Stanford game in South Bend.

    FWIW, I don't like the radio silence on Redfield, but the longer we get from the USC visit without a commit the better. Let the trip buzz wear off. I do worry that his folks are pushing for him to stay close. Shame.

    I did mean exactly that.

    As for the Theus remark, not sure where he was from(now I do), I meant more the "ND is a solid #2" option type thinking that he and Treggs had all along. We'll see here, but its clearly a horserace.

  • Posted on twitter, Redfield states he is 50/50 between ND and USC. After what we heard about how well USC did with him over the weekend, with some recruits and analysts saying he would recommit to USC, I think this means he is trending back in our direction. Hope so
