  • Ok I have had a night to ruminate on the debacle that was the Champs Sports Bowl.

    A couple of thoughts:

    1. We are in serious need of a QB. I know this is the duh-huh statement of the year, but that is what kept this from being a ND blowout. Indecision, misreads, and the ubiquitous weak arm. In this offense the QB HAS to be able to run and gun the ball down the field.

    2. Our DB's could not cover in a man situation. Even Gilmore and Testicletore saw this. A couple of times in the first half when Diaco brought pressure FSU had WR running open. Personally I would rather allow some of that than the slow grinding death we suffered. Live by the blitz, die by the blitz I say - but that is just me.

    3. Kelly did not cost us this game in prep or play calling. However we can argue that the QB situation all year cost the team this game. The calling and decisions on the sidelines were solid in my opinion; not perfect but solid.

    4. This team HAS to find a replacement for Floyd! W/O him the offense went into a shell. Not sure if this is the product of over-reliance on Floyd or what. The passes to Eifert were good even though Eifert is nursing some bruised ribs this morning. Toma and Jones were conspicuously silent which only muddies the answer to Floyd graduating.

    5. If anyone here has ever hurt their hip flexor you would NOT question Floyd's toughness. That crap is PAINFUL, and while he could have played with it, he could NOT have gotten open which negates him on the field.

As for the "FIRE KELLY" and "WE SUCK" posts, please go back and rewatch the game (have Malox available). This team is close, very close to being what we want. The defense is a player in the secondary away from being elite. The offense has shed itself of Molnar which will probably pay benefits next year. While the past cannot ever predict the future, in 1987 Holtz got rid of his DC (went to Pitt as HC I believe) and the following year the defense bowed up and led us to the NC. Right now the offense is the weak link and hopefully with a couple of players, some QB coaching-up, and everyone on the same page, it will move into the same category as the defense. Even if it just becomes serviceable and reliable then we win almost every game and perhaps all of them.

  • I've said it before and I'll say again.....and again.....and again.....when Kelly starts to evaluate this entire season in a couple of weeks the first thing he needs to do is take a good long look at himself. No he isn't going to be fired nor should he but if he's going to give an honest assessment on this team he needs to first be honest with himself. He was part of the problem this year.

Now, you don't replace a player like Floyd...it's next to impossible. You find a viable option to fill the slot and look for everyone else to step up at the other receiver positions. I'm as concerned as anyone as to where Toma, Riddick and Jones were last night but I also know that when you have a superstar on the team like Floyd it's very easy to give him the first, second and even third look. Not saying it's going to happen but the entire receiving group could get a boost without Floyd on the field in terms of production. This isn't a knock on Floyd, I'm just saying that its easy for the team to lean too much on Floyd offensively.

  • NC has a fellow Coach there is no one on this board who I agree with more often than you my friend. Your synopsis is spot on. I have felt since the spring game that E Golson was the QB of the future, the red shirt tells me BK feels the same. The interceptions by Rees were inexplicable...I mean my 12 yr old who plays QB flipped out when TR threw those picks. If Andrew Hendrix was good he would have already beaten out Rees, the only difference I see between them is Hendy can run.
ND must have more playmakers on O, Atkinson.? He nearly housed one that would have been the difference. Freshman can start right away in the secondary.
Your right NC this team is very very close

Great post. Kelly made a mistake that cost him the entire season, the QB position.

With a decent QB we win at least a couple of games we lost. So many times our D bailed us out, only to have the offense do nothing with it, how demoralizing must that be?

It wasn't play calling it was execution, but ultimately if we have the wrong QB, that is all Kelly.

Riddick was in the backfield. I don't know why they didn't use a freshman back there to spell Wood because we could have really used Riddick as a WR as opposed to Goodman.

kking in some ways I agree with your analysis. I am not sure that Hendrix is the answer, I know that Rees isnt. That being said, how do we handle the situation with Golston does something boneheaded a couple of times in a game next year? There is a lot of pressure in that position in Kelly's offense and I hope EG can handle it.

  • Duke and Frito, appreciate the responses.

To use a Bob Davie phrase, this year has left me discombobulated watching this team. At times we are SO close, and at others I am reminded of the last couple of Weis years. The more I watch the more I am convinced though that this team is getting better in many ways that arent readily apparent on TV. A couple of players here and there and things will be much better. Ahhh... the fun of being a fan.

  • There is only one question going into the off season, if #5 can't upgrade the most important position on the field in 2012, we are screwed and probably looking at 6-6 or 7-5 next year.

I just finished watching the game (yecch!) and dreaded coming to the board, so I just opened the first thread I saw which was this one, and will probably stop here. Great stuff, nc, and I agree with Duke, as well, and GIGA, though absent specifics, not sure how far I would go, but yes, BK has some soul searching to do. And Hodges and Simm, too, when they say (or imply) we better pray Golson's the guy. I just want to put this season in the rear view mirror.

  • Thank you for the great post ncirish. I'm in completely agreement.

QB is the first and foremost problem. It was so terrible that I just wanted us to run and run and run and play the field position game.

Everyone says how they're concerned about our secondary next year losing all the upperclassmen. I'm stoked about it. Our secondary has held back an otherwise very stout defense. Not turning for the ball, getting beat behind you, not covering your deep zones, dropped int's, etc etc etc.. We may be young next year, but damn it at least they'll play every play and not get pushed around. We need to keep this class together and our defense will be special.

We definitely do need a MF3 replacement. I'm hoping and praying Greenberry sticks because he seems to be cut from the same mold.

I agree on Coach. He deserves at least a five year window. We're getting a ton of great young talent. We just need to get it all into our system. However, I fault him for trying to use a two QB system. It failed, no one could establish rythum, and the offense suffered. We need to name our QB next year and stick with him regardless. Hendrix won't let us down once he knows he's 'the guy'. .

  • Nice synopsis, NC.

    Can't agree more.

The offense should be interesting if Warriner get the OC job. Don't know why he wouldn't, but stranger things have happened (like Molnar getting the job to begin with -- he never had that position in a Div I school, but was promoted because Quinn moved on).

I kind of wondered why Martin didn't get the DC position, instead of Diaco. There were times that Diaco did incredible planning and adjusting, and then there were other times when he got too conservative and stopped doing what was working. Prevent defense against Mich adn FSU caused disasters late in the games.

Oh well, we have a long, long off season to ruminate on these thoughts.

That being said, how do we handle the situation with Golston does something boneheaded a couple of times in a game next year? There is a lot of pressure in that position in Kelly's offense and I hope EG can handle it.

What we have seen is that Kelly can't coach quarterbacks well - Kelly needs a natural fit for his offense that he doesn't have to coach up nor choose between the lesser of two evils. I personally think his sideline demeanor stripped most of the poise from the qbs (I'm gonna catch hell on national tv, be benched, be ridiculed on the sideline, oh crap) in crisis we needed. Find Kelly a stud quartback, we will do fine - EXCEPT

What is glaringly absent from the team, and I'm surprised you didn't mention it, nc, is special teams play, notably no punt returns to speak of. Horrible.

Fix the lack of a stud qb, and special teams, fill one or two holes in the secondary - boom, we contend. Easy, peasy. Yeah, right.

MBD you caught me! I guess that MF punt return had me feeling all giddy inside. The PR scheme needs some serious adjusting for sure. If we think back to the Holtz days, Rocket pulled some of those teams out of the fire (thinking Michigan and MSU especially).

Also I am inclined to agree about the type of QB needed. Let me stew on that one a while...
