NCAA got it right..........Message for us all.

  • Look...no one loves the NCAA....but I really think they got it right with Penn State. They delivered swift and just punishment. And the right message for EVERYONE EVERYWHERE......including here at Notre Dame....hero/program worship and winning at all cost should never replace values, responsibility and accountability.

    Good on ya.

Sad day for college sports - but a chapter we should never forget.

Personally, I disagree. I think their sanctions were hollow and meaningless in the end. Money, vacating past wins, and preventing future bowl appearances for a complete and utter lack of concern for children's welfare? Seems trivial, and tells us all that the death penalty will almost never be used again. How can it be when they have set this precedent?

I was not in favor of the NCAA doing anything because I believe it is out of their depth, and as I suspected, they made a symbolic but silly move. If they wanted to make a statement, they should have silenced the program and its fans for a year. Anything else just seems insincere.

  • IrishWon - this was an extreme case and required extreme action - which the NCAA did.

If you listened to the presser - the message was really well crafted - and they repeatedly came back to the victims. The money they will take from Penn State will go directly to an endowned fund to help future abuse victims. They were clear that keeping the program rather than killing it - better directed the impact than the unintended consequences of killing the program (like a bunch of unemployed people in State College).

I do love the money part of the sanctions. It will go for a good purpose. I didn't mean to disparage that part of the punishment. I just hate the precedent that this set, and the message it sent. This brand continued to make 100's of millions of dollars while these guys covered this up. And while I understand it would have put some people out of work, and that is a very good point, it just seems to trivialize what these kids went through because some guys who cared more about the PSU brand and football games. Making it about scholarship numbers, bowl games and wins just rings hollow to me. I certainly understand that we all have different opinions on this though.
I just hope the feds do a number on these administrators, and the civil lawsuits are crippling as well.
