ND ACADEMICS AND TEE

  • Hi fellas... I have been saying for about 15 years the after Holtz ND took the path of NorthWestern and Stanford... We simple are who we are... and will be until and I know all you alum hate to hear this ... we ease up on academics for the Athletes... especially FB... the whole game has changed ND is one of many now... The talent pool is much bigger all schools are on TV and Frankly as great as the idea of 40 year decision sounds to Alum who is not an elite athlete... THEY are and simply dont need the hassel... 18 year olds mostly don think like that... our kids do... To be competitive we need many more exceptions... Some latitude for these kids that are exceptions....

Or just be happy who we are... because much aint changing soon... we will not be Alabama like ever again as things stand... in football...

  • No idea if this opinion is shared on this site, but I would personally rather have my ND degree maintain its integrity. That thing was difficult to get and difficult to pay for (the paying-for part is ongoing).

  • I dont doubt it and count me jealous...:) but you want a team that can compete... maybe you become OK with 90 guys that are not as academically talented as you... but brings you joy on Saturdays... lets be honest less than 1% of graduates that are not in your league does not demish your degree for ND... and franly most will catch on... but to ask a kid from lower SEC country to ge through Calc in the dead of winter... just not going to happen... when there are so many other options...

  • Dan,

I see were you're coming from and you make some good points, but I think it is possible for ND to follow what Stanford has done. That is be successful on the football field without sacrificing academics. I believe Stanford had an 87% graduation rate for its football players last year.

This goal definitely shrinks our talent base, but giving more academic exceptions wont necessarily help dramatically. I say dramatically because ND is a unique school. It lacks many things a lot of other football schools have. ND has no fraternities or sororities. It is not a party place like other schools and will likely never be. The dorms are single sex and many of them are in need of renovations. Academic requirements for players are just one of many things that separates ND from other schools. Potential recruits who dont want the academics may not like these other limitations as well.

One of the things that makes ND special is its commitment to academics. And as an alum, it is one of the things I am most proud of and was most proud of when I was a student there. No, I am not an elite athlete, but I think academics are one of the things that make ND what it is and that is not going to change either. ND should not run away from this but embrace it. I am sure all the recruits have full knowledge of the rigors and many have cited this when choosing ND.

As far as Tee, I don't know what happened. I wont speculate, but will wish him the best where ever he lands. ND is different and not for everyone unfortunately.

  • Could not agree more... guys... so I guess your decision has been made... I am just saying we will lucky anymore to be Stanford... I live in Norcal it aint SB...

But like I said if the product is ok... and you are ok with the product, well fellas this is what you get... I mean last 20 years not just Tee

  • Dan,

I'm definitely not happy with the product by any means. But I think ND could and can do both. The last 20 years were not just because of academics. There are a host of reasons.

As a former norcal resident I agree with you that Standford is different than ND. Stanford definitely has a much better climate, but Standford and ND both share the same academic goals. So how come we cant be like Standford? I guess whats so different (weather aside) between ND and Standford?

Why are you guys acting like Stanford is someone we want to emulate? They haven't done anything! They had 4 winning seasons out of the past 15....2 excellent seasons in the past 10, and it was because of an amazingly awesome coach and QB that are now both gone. Stanford will slip back to being Stanford in football. Suggesting that we want to be them is a joke.

In their past 10 seasons Stanford is 56 - 63....Is that what you guys are aspring to?

I understand they have the same issue as us when it comes to academics, but they haven't solved that problem either, from a winning consistently standpoint. It's like people just started watching football in the past 3 years or something.

  • IW, I was only arguing that if Stanford can balancing winning and academics the last couple years, so can ND. I didn't say ND should emulate Stanford in all regards. These next few years will tell how good of a program Harbuagh built and how good of a coach Shaw is. I think they will regress bit, but I'm curious to see how much.

I think there is a difference between ever so slightly bending the academic requirements and allowing kids to skip class and not hold up any part of the student end in student athlete. We have certainly lost more than a few players because of just missing academic requirements but rumor is that Tee flat out just didn't even go to class, and thats an area we absolutely cannot bend on. If the rumors are true, and they sound plausible, the team is flat out better off without this kid. Its tough but we have to move on.
