ND Post-Spring Wrap-Up: ILBs

Personnel, coaching situation, potential freshman impact and vital stats are among the topics addressed.

  • Nice job again Lou. Spot on with a 7. Teo alone is about a 9, he is a Championship player. But the others have shown some flaws in coverage, tackling and being in the wrong place at times. Hopefully Fox/Calabrese(about a 5) can get alot better or Grace can rise up to place at a BCS level alongside Manti bringing that 7 up.

  • we are what we are here, and this is where, IMO, Diaco needs to step it up and coach them up to show the improvement in consistency. the talent is there, will the coaching prove that?

Run the ball. Stop the run. You win, or lose, up front.

  • IMO inside linebacker has caused ND huge problems since the Stonebreaker accident after the '88 season and the season ending injury to Tony Peterson in 1993. ND will never have enough talent on D to cover for one dimensional inside linebackers; maybe one, but never two.

  • I see this just a little differently. I agree with your whole analysis, Lou, but it seems to me that the limitations and shortcomings are in the front seven's overall play, not just the lb's. In the same way that if the line eats up the blocks, the lb's get credit for a lot of tackles, the opposite happens if the line doesn't get pressure or play out of positiion. I think that all our defensive units tended to play out of position at times last year and to me it looked like this was an issue of trust- in other words, guys were trying to cheat over to cover a teammate's area etc. I think if these guys learn to each do their job as assigned and as practiced, the turnovers will come and the big play escapes will drop significantly. I think the players are plenty good enough, in fact better than the players on some units that outperform them (I wouldn't trade players with K State, for instance)

  • I rewatced the spring game focusing on the linebackers and Utupo and Grace were terrible. They were often demolished by the linemen and were totally ineffective. Grace showed hustle at times when he was pursuing to the opposite side of the field, but this was after being blocked by a linemen.

  • Let er rip.
The offensive has been under wraps to the point of predictable and needs a flair.

    Keep it simple.
On the other hand, the defense may need a more aggressive attack approach without complicated reads.
