Through the midway point of spring drills this past weekend, this is the synopsis of the offense.
Here's hoping that Cam McDaniel gets more than token carries this year.
God. Country. Notre Dame.
A lot of interest out there about Cam. Lou, I'd love to hear what your thoughts are on his PT this year? And why?
Do you remember a running back at Air Force in 2007 named Chad Hall? He was about 5-9, 190, was the Mountain West Conference player of the year, totaled 272 all-purpose yards in a 41-24 victory at Notre Dame, and he even latched on in the NFL as a free agent.
When I see McDaniel at times, I think of Chad Hall. He's "that guy" on an Air Force or Navy that you say, "How the heck does he do it?" I think at ND in 2005-07 when the Irish were thin at running back beyond Darius Walker, he could have been more active. Then again, maybe not given how Travis Thomas, James Aldridge, etc. never really blossomed in the scheme.
Right now, it's hard to project. I could see him maybe as that third back this year the way GAIII was last season behind Riddick and Wood. A lot of this depends on how healthy Amir Carlisle can stay.
I'm not usually one to expect freshman help or project much for them, but I have a feeling Greg Bryant is going to actively get into the rotation as the season progresses.
Atkinson had 51 carries last year, so I'd probably set the over/under for Cam close to that. I respect the heck out of the young man and believe he's better than a lot of people might give him credit for. If he's needed in a pinch, I don't think he'd disappoint. You don't produce the way he did in a really competitive Texas area without having a lot of skills, durability and heart.
Well said and thanks for the insight.
