ND vs. UMass In 2015

  • According to the Daily Hampshire Gazette, Notre Dame will host the University of Massachusetts in the 2015 football season. This past December, UMass hired Brian Kelly's former QB coach at Cincinnati Charley Molnar, who also had the offensive coordinator title at ND in 2010-11. It is the first meeting between the two programs, and it will be a one-game contract, according to the Gazette. UMass is making the jump from the FCS to FBS this fall and will play in the Mid-American Conference.

Notre Dame has not released any full-season football schedules beyond 2012. The Irish are scheduled to begin September 2015 with Texas (Sept. 5), at Michigan (Sept. 12), at Purdue (Sept. 19) and Temple (Sept. 26). Possible open dates include Oct. 3 and Oct. 24.

  • On paper, UMass is arguably the least impressive team Notre Dame has ever scheduled to play in football. The Irish have never played a FCS (Div. I-AA) school and the Minutemen are as close to that as you can get right now. For those of you that have been around longer than I have, what's the least exciting opponent you remember personally?

Western Michigan or perhaps Navy under George Chaump. His Midshipmen teams were dreadful.

My luck w/the Irish 18-6...GO IRISH!!!

Without question, the SMU team that was coming off of the death penalty.

  • Irish brian,

Good one. Notre Dame could have hung 95 on SMU that year the way Houston did, but Lou Holtz gave strict orders in the fourth quarters for his players not to score (Rusty Setzer ran out of bounds at the 2 and ND then took delay of game penalties in the fourth quarter) — and then he was criticized for "point shaving" in the 59-6 win.

Here's the sad thing, though. USF didn't even start playing football until 1997 and didn't go Division 1-A until 2001 — and won last year in Notre Dame Stadium.

UConn didn't go Division 1-A until 2002 — but won in Notre Dame Stadium in 2009. In between, Tulsa also pulled a surprise in 2010.

I thought playing a 2-8 Syracuse team with a lame duck coach was about as boring as ou could get. Little did I know.....

  • Despite all the examples listed above, USF, UConn, Syracuse.... I'm going out on a limb and predicting a victory for the Irish over U Mass. I will be trying to sell my tickets to that game however.

This is one of the few times I will agree with you. This makes no sense to me at all. UMass??? We are talking about UMass right?? This is the kind of game the SEC teams schedule. Why on earth would you schedule this team? Come on guys Id love to get an SEC team scheduled or another team that is actually, well you know, GOOD. So yes IMO Pitiful is a very fitting word for this.

  • I hope this is inaccurate. ND has truly turned a regretful and disappointing corner in its football history if this happens.

Maybe Molnar reached out and requested the game. They need teams to fill the schedule so we should see some interesting Non Conference games the first few years. I highly doubt Swarbick called UMass and asked for the game.

Rutgers in 2002. They were terrible then. My son, the high school QB I was coaching, and his Dad had the pleasure of being present for the 49-0 snoozer.
