ND’s Best Freshmen: Offensive Line

On the 40th anniversary of the NCAA permitting freshman eligibility, we review Notre Dame’s best true freshmen at each position.

  • Steve Niehaus was dominant right out of the box. He was dominant on defense. But didn't he also play some ot, I am thinking in goal line

  • marklawrence,

We have no record of him playing along the offensive line during his freshman season in 1972. He started the first four games and led the team in tackles (47) during a 4-0 start (with two shutouts) before a knee injury in practice kept him out the balance of the season.

  • I guess this begs the question why Young did not develop better during his years at ND. This is an area BK and Staff have shown a huge improvement -- our guys actually get better during their days at ND, instead of regressing.
    No hard data on this.
    Just my opinion.
    Go Irish!

  • Didn't Aaron Taylor play as a freshman? He should be on that list.

  • Maged Ibrahim,

Believe it or not, Aaron Taylor played in only two games as a freshman in 1990, blowouts of Purdue and Air Force in which he totaled only 7 minutes and 56 seconds combined.

If you were to name the top 5 offensive linemen at ND over the past 40 years, Aaron would be No. 1. But we're talking about what they did in their freshman year. The five we listed are the only five at ND who ever started a game as true freshman offensive linemen.

Wasn't Wisne a DL coming out of OK? Who were the other OL in that class?

    star69

  • star69,

He was considered a defensive line recruit by many but he, Ridder, Rosenthal, Dan Wenger and Alex Mueller all lined up on offense as freshmen in 1995.

Mueller is an interesting trivia question because ND gave out the full scholarship allotment of 25 that year, and it was reported that the Irish gave the scholarship him, thereby leaving out DE Jevon "The Freak" Kearse, who purportedly wanted to sign with ND.

How much is fact and fiction, I'm not sure.

  • don't remember how much tim grunhard played (?) as a freshman, but 14 yrs in the nfl should have him on one of the best lists

    Coach_Clancy

  • Coach_Clancy,

The category is best freshman years, not what they did in the NFL. Grunhard probably could be on the all-time All-Underrated Notre Dame team.

Grunhard was the starting long-snapper for the Irish as a freshman, but saw very little action at guard. He did start four games the next season (1987) as a sophomore
