Needs to be Gunner

  • All the talk about experience, for what? TR came in with no experience (starts) and went 4-0. Give the ball to Gunner now and we will not be in this same boat next year. Do not need another QB "contest". The best I see EG going is, maybe 7&5. We can't expect perfection, this year anyway. We play a great schedule and need our QB next year to be seasoned and ready to carry ND to the BCS and a NC in the next 3 years. EG was a 3*, Gunner a 5*, both with the same experience...zero. Think about it, take a few lumps this year, go 9&3 with Gunner, he will win games that EG won't. Big arm and QB family. Besides he has something to prove to that scum bag at LSU. Gunner will win games and put the QB question to bed. Give him the ball!!! GO IRISH

What to you expect this year...record wise?

  • We have Hendrix, Golson, and Gunner. Plus two more "recruits" who are QBs. If Kelly plays TR again, the best of these kids will be looking to transfer. I can't see Golson standing on the side line, hoping to play as a junior - especially behind a QB who committed over 20 TOs, and can't out run my Gram!

Or you can look at it this way: if TR is as bad as you say, and the other guys can't beat him out, how badly are other schools going to want them? Besides, Golson's a RS Freshman this year. If Rees does beat him out, and he's next in line, he starts two years here. If he sits this year, then transfers, he's sitting another year, regardless, so either way, he doesn't see the field for two more years. Bottom line if he, or any of the others are that good, they should beat out Rees. If they can't beat him out, we have our answer, whether we like it or not.

  • Gunnar would win less games this year than all of the other 3. He doesn't have the strongest arm, he is the most green, he hasn't picked up the playbook, he can't read defenses (yet), he hasn't adjusted to the speed of the game, he is the 3rd most athletic/mobile of the 4. It's a joke to just "give him the ball" because he was a 5 star recruit. If Golson was as tall as Gunnar, he would have been a 5 star as well. Gunnar's skill set is actually less impressive than Hendrix and Golson IMO. The kid has a future, but just "giving him the ball" in 2012 spells disaster.

    NDShepard

  • Gunner does have a strong arm, is mobile, and definitely can read defenses just as good or better than Golson. The kid grew up in a QB family so he knows what he is doing. Most analysts claimed he was theist college ready QB to come out since Barkley. I'd still like to see him either red shirt this year or get some garbage time to prepare him for next year when he takes over full time. I'm not like everyone else who is sold on Golson because high school tape. Go with Hendrix this year and Gunner for the next 3

    scott24105

  • NDShepard, your wrong about Gunner I've seen him play he does have the arm.

    daconner

  • What am I wrong about? I didn't say he has a weak arm. I said it not the strongest of the 4. That's a FACT! Ask the coaches and the players. Golson has the strongest arm of the 4.

So you are not sold on Golson "just because of his high school tape" but you are sold on Gunnar because of his star rating and high school tape? That makes no sense.

especially when you have a head coach who is not comitted to a strong running game to help him out. i know i beat this dead horse about the run. but if you don't control the line of scrimmage and the clock while pounding it, expecting a young qb to hit the bulleyes and move those chains is a pipe dream......

Run the ball. Stop the run. You win, or lose, up front.

    Coach_Clancy

  • Coach Kelly has a very balanced attack and runs the ball often. Do you watch ND football?

    NDShepard

  • NDShepard I'm not sold on Gunner because of his tape and ranking but more to the fact that he starred at every camp and event he attended against very good competition and was said to be far and away the best QB at the army all American game. Add that to the fact most analyst, like I said earlier, had him as the best prospect since Barkley. And also his pedigree plays a factor for me, as do his physical stats. Then you have Golson who, let's be honest, most ND fans never even heard of until ND started recruiting him not doing any of the above Kiel has. The videos of him in high school are great but he wasn't facing the best competition, looked bad in last years spring game, and has had trouble with turnovers and still having difficulty reading the defenses. Gunner played against poor competing as well but he did go against the best in the country at various camps and was always on top. So yes Gunner has shown me more.

I still think Hendrix should start this year

Golson played WAAAAY better competition in high school, led his teams to multiple state championships, had WAAAAY better stats. I also think he played very well in the spring game last season. Gunnar played very poorly at the AAA game and turned the ball over to the point ND fans were saying "he is over rated" and "I'm glad he is going to LSU, we don't need another turnover machine". All Gunnar has on Golson is a star rating. Golson has better stats, skill set, played better competition, and has a year in the system. I wouldn't mind Hendrix as the starter either, but Gunnar has a long way to go.

    NDShepard

  • Shepard,

His name is Gunner not Gunnar. What are you being another Les "Scumbag" Miles? Call the man by his real name. Respect, just give him respect.....and the ball too!!!!

NDShepard- I also agree that Golson has a strong arm. Yes I do watch Notre Dame Football and yes I've watched the turnovers from the starters from Last year. Sometimes I believe in airing it out is just as important as having a solid running game But my friend if you think BK ran a balanced offense last year you were probably watching Notre Dame from the 90's. If you can stretch that defense last year with Michael Floyd it could have opened the offense even more last year. Also if you think that Rees has a better arm than Kiel than I'll have one of what your Drinking. I truly Believe Tommy Rees has reached his Max. But if does better, than we will all Cheer for Notre Dame.

    Notre Dame 2011 Stats-

    Passing Attempts- 473
    Carries- 433

    That's a 52/48 ratio.
    How is that not balanced???

    Pay more attention.

Secondly, I never said Rees had a stronger arm than Kiel. Ever. Rees has the weakest arm on the team. Not sure where you pulled that comment from.

I'm sorry, but what? This kid has been raised as a QB. I guarantee he's done more than just picked up the playbook as well.. His arm is just as impressive as EG's and while he isn't the most mobile, he's still an above average runner with 4.7 speed; that's all this offense needs is a true QB who is a threat in the open as well, not some 4.4 QB. This is Nebraska or Navy, it's a spread offense. While the learning curve is steeper, I do not believe him starting spells disaster. In fact, I feel quite the opposite. Gunner Kiel is our future and with gained experience will come greatness. He's not some average QB who played in a BS HS offense, he's a very intelligent football player whose been learning the nuances of playing QB since he started playing football and he's the best man for the job.

    #1) 4.7 is not above average. LB's and DE's run 4.7. And I doubt he runs a legit 4.7. More like a 4.8-4.9

#2) How many true freshmen QB's have success at the major college level vs the type of opponents ND will see this year? I bet you couldn't name 5.

#3) Do you really think being in a "QB Family" makes that much of a difference? Do you follow youth sports? Kids these days get personal trainers and coaches at a very young age. Kiel doesn't have an advantage because his siblings and uncle played QB.

    1. Darron Thomas from Oregon ran a 4.8.. Did you watch Oregon play? I wouldn't consider him to be a below-average runner, would you? Andrew Luck ran a 4.67. Is that not above average to you? I've seen posted multiple times by multiple sources that Gunner runs a 4.7, so whether or not you doubt it, I'm going to go with what I hear over what you believe is true.

    2. They may not have major success initially, but they develop and turn into program-changers by the end of their careers and top-10 picks. You see, we want to develop a championship program, not an 8-5 program like Tommy has done. If it takes another year or two, who cares? We've waiting the better part of 3 decades so I can't see another year or two more hurting anything if we become a regular BCS-team.

    3. And yes I do. How kids are raised in sports makes a major difference in their personal development. And contrary to what you may believe, not that many kids are privileged enough to have personal coaches and personal trainers at a young age. He does have an advantage because he has been preparing like a college QB since he was 15.
