Niklas moving to TE?

  • scriptcomes1st said...

When we slow played McNamera we still had Darby, Greenberry, and Decker. We also had legit shots at the Armstead's and Poole. Most of the discussion was centered on which valuable 5th year we would turn away.

Don't like the move. We never had a legit shot at Poole. He wanted to be a Gator the entire time.

  • Sorry, but I know that not to be the case. He really had a tough time saying no to Alford.

    Answer: you can't

I like the move. Give's EG a safety valve all times!!!

ND must not of liked McNamara because he wanted to come and there were spots available. Not sure why they had him visit though. This was a head scratcher for me.

After further evaluations the ND staff just wasn't as high on McNamara was a big part of the equation

  • If this is the Gronkowski/Jimmy Graham effect and Niklas can provide that, sign me up. I do think its funny that we as posters view this move as a negative against the TEs and not a positive that we just have a lot of expendable talent at the OLB/DE positions. Me included!

With what seems as a number of capable bodies at TE this year now, seems ND will continue to focus on running the ball and possibly producing two 1,000 yard rushers or maybe Wood gets 1,500. I love running out of the spread formations, Oregon is a thing of beauty, guys then seem to come wide open on play action passing routes.

Is Jarret Grace an ILB or OLB?

  • HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am copying below what I posted 24 days ago(page 14 here among the posts - Niklas to TE - and I followed it up with lengthier reasoning later in the thread). I was bombarded with No's of all forms(22 in total) with the exception of 2 (HODGES and DEJHALEY). Didnt think the validation would come so soon, but definitely thought it would at some point during the year.

No, it isnt reported fact, just a you heard it here first type thing that I predict we will see NIklas at TE.

With OLB depth and little depth at the Off Skill positions, TE is a position we are strong in, and could use depth in what I think will be multiple double TE sets in 2012

Just a part time thing for Troy, he'll be a little bit of everywhere.

Think he'll line up there, yes or no?

Pretty sure grace is an ILB.

I think the fact that NIklas played TE on scout team last year makes this a well-calculated position change. This isn't the staff just saying, "well he can probably play there." Evidently they say enough in practice that they think he can help the team a lot more at TE than splitting time at OLB. As long as the starting QB can get him the ball next year, I'm fine with whatever!!

PS What poster on here mentioned Niklas to TE about a month ago? I know he got railed pretty good, and although I didn't post on the topic I kind of thought it was stupid to even mention. Well played, sir.

That'd be me Sir. Thanks for remembering...

And I dont think we've seen the end of him on Defense by any stretch. We'll see plenty of 2 and 3 TE sets(Eifert out wide in the red zone) and Troy has to know what he's doing.

What I also like about this is that I sure HOPE that this is an indication that Williams and my boy Ben Councell appear ready and primed to have good years.

Coach, I honestly can't remember if I commented back then. If I did I probably would have said it made no sense to take a player who had already seen some time at OLB and probably would be in the 2 deep this season and switch that kid to TE, a position with 3 very talented people ahead of him. Since then a few things have changed. First, I admit I had no idea that Niklas was playing TE on the scout team. 2, I read that Diaco plans on utilizing the Extra Safety up at the line of scrimmage, ala Slaughter in the Florida St. game, more often, reducing the role of the OLB a bit. 3. I have read that Martin may use Eifert as a wide out, often, creating a spot for another TE.
I did know that Niklas played OL in HS and is reputed to be a very good blocker. Kelly referred to him as 'The Freak' last season, so it is easy to see why he would want him on offense. We do have a plethora of LBs and if Niklas can contribute quickly on offense? I'm all in.
    Nice call!!

  • Thanks psdo

I too did not know he was scout team TE. My earlier reasons were: glut of OLBs, NON glut of WRs and now present day need to fill the 5 skill slots with TEs and utilities like GA III. I also said weeks upon months ago that unless something drastic happens(Agholor, Dorial Green Beckham, etc etc..) we will look alot like the Pats next year(but our QB will be more mobile) with 2 TEs(Gronk=Eifert, Koyak(and also Niklas)=Hernandez, Welker=Toma).

But I stay with it that NIklas will NOT be exclusive to one side of the ball. He might not be the only one either(Neal?? if we need a "Guard that dude in press m-t-m on this 3rd and 7 play. If he goes and gets a hot dog, go with him!" type coverage).

With all the possibilities we have, it could be a really exciting year learning how to expect the unexpected. :)

  • Niklas also played special teams and if he is not a 'starter' then I expect that ST role to continue. I mentioned this last year (different site) that our 2 deep was more talented than I could remember for a long time. This coming season that is even more true. I have a higher degree of confidence in our '2nd man in' vs the starter, than I have in a very long time. We really do have a very athletic roster.

I've posted this previously, but going into last year's recruiting cycle, ND was not set on taking a TE as they felt they had needs at other positions. Clearly, they had Kent Taylor at the top of their board, but also recruited McNamara as a 2nd option. However, from the get go they were very honest with him - his offer would have more to do with whether Eifert would come back or if a scholarship opened up by Jake Golic getting a medical redshirt. Neither of those happened, and McNamara wanted to make a decision in December rather than wait it out, so ND was honest and up front with him and let him make the decision to go to OU.

At that point, ND still had Greenberry and Decker, and had a bunch of other prospects above him on the board (as script noted above). We did not feel TE was a position of need because of what we had currently on the roster, and that included Niklas being part of the equation.

Niklas did see some spot time at the DOG position this year, but that's not where he was suited best - recall, the main reason he saw time there was because Shembo's father had the medical emergency and Danny Spond was injured, so we had no other options (even Filer saw time there that game). By the end of the year, his primary role was coming in at dime and nickel situations and rushing the passer. He was always a better fit at the CAT than the DOG, but we're most likely going to be moving Shembo to CAT this year. Ishaq Williams is versatile enough to play both OLB positions, and then you have Councell who the staff is very high on as a RS FR. Either way, whether it's at OLB, DE, or TE, we have a bunch of young talent to work with, so the staff thinks they need to put him where he not only fits best, but helps the team the most.

Now go to the other side of the ball, and at TE you now have 4 very big, very talented, very athletic TEs in Eifert, Welch, Koyack, and Niklas. Eifert will be gone after this year, as well as Golic, leaving us with 3 TE's remaining for 2013. Each guy will have 2 years remaining after that, but Welch may not get a 5th depending on the production levels and scholarship distribution, so you have Koyack and Niklas for sure until 2014. With the shift in coordinators and potential change in offensive identity, this is a good move to at least experiment with. Niklas has really impressed the staff with his athletic ability since day 1, and they see an opportunity here for a large body to help out in the red zone (an area we struggled in), as well as give us a more physical presence.

    Great fact-based analysis.

Nothing like paying attention and supporting an argument with details.

As for my view, I think Kelly is committed to getting as many of the best players onto the field as he can. If this involves some experimenting, why not?

I was struck by the recent articles from LS on former ND greats. Niklas reminids me a little -- versatility-wise -- of Dave Casper, who, at different times, lined up at TE, tackle, wideout, defender. He played all those positions because he could, and, when ND needed him, there he was.

Niklas may be embarking on his own odyssey. It's a good thing. He's an athlete. That was Ara's method -- and Holtz's, too. Give me 22 athletes, and we'll figure out where to play them.

    Risksorter

  • This is an example of Kelly's recruiting strategy of getting big, long, quick athletes on the roster and then finding out how best to use them. I can't wait to see how it turns out.

Even at 6'-7", while awfully tall for an OLB, Niklas had impressed. I'd love to see his athleticism and physicality at TE.

And yes, it has to mean the staff likes what they're seeing at OLB.

    All around, I like it.

  • Wow. Incredible forsight coachcft. I missed the thread a couple weeks ago, and hadn't even thought about the possibility of moving Niklas to TE. However, I completely agree with your logic. While, all we can do is speculate at this point, I think we can make some educated assumptions based on this decision:

    1) Our staff likes our OLB depth: I don't believe that we would move a contributing player if we didn't like what else we had there. So, this bodes well for Councell and Williams; and/or

    2) We will see a lot more of the hybrid S/OLB role: This was pretty common last year, especially against spread/option type teams. Also, we've added a couple players in the 2012 class that seem to fit this hybrid role (Shumate & Barratti); and/or

    3) We will see a lot of multiple TE sets: We used some in the first two years of the BK Era. However, rarely did you see multiple TEs running routes. Usually, Eifert ran routes and the other blocked. Call it the Gronk Effect, if you want. But I think a lot of teams, not just ND, are realizing the types of mismatches you can create with multiple TEs.

I think this is also a byproduct of Martin taking over OC duties. [Note: This is an assumption I am basing off comments made publicly by Martin, or public comments from recruits whom have spoken with Martin about the future of the offense.] I believe Martin wants a more physical, run-oriented offense. Adding more athletic, bigger bodies to the lineup will accomplish that. And if you don't lose anything (or maybe even gain some) in the area of passcatchers, it seems like a no brainer. Coachcft (again, mad props) pointed out that this staff will put the best players on the field. I think the staff thinks, at least, 2 of our best 5 skill players are TEs. We won't know until we see it on the field, but I am encouraged by the staff's willingness to be creative in an attempt to create the best, most productive offense possible.

And yeah, I sure hope we're right about #1, I really do. For some reason, call it a just plain feeling in my gut, that Councell's 4 stars might surpass Williams's 5 stars.

coach, I'll go with your gut. You're like Jethro Gibbs on NCIS. Always goes with the gut, always right. When I first saw this thread (I do not remember your prognisticating this event last month), my heart sank. I have been looking forward to watching Troy "HERCULES" Niklas absolutely wreaking havoc on opposing qb's for the next 3 seasons. My fantasy of Niklas, Lynch, Tuitt, Williams, Big Nix in the middle, Councell..... you see where I'm going here, looks like it's gonna take a hit. But if Niklas can be a difference maker at TE, then obviously I'm all for it, provided the D doesn't suffer due to losing him on that side of the ball. I'm sorry, though I cannot get excited about 3 TE sets. I'm sure that'll change when I see Niklas or Eiffert runing wild and free on a seam route for a 65 yd td. But I love defense, and nothing is more impressive than a dominating D just demoralizing another team.
