Nix Is Not Happy (It seems this way, at least)

  • It is pretty obvious by his tweets that Louis Nix is not happy that Kona Schwenke is being listed as the #1 NG over him. He is making comments about weighing 295, coincidentally Schwenke's weight. It seems as if Brian Kelly's motivation tactics with Nix might be causing a bit of an issue for the big man weighing 355 lbs.
    We'll see what happens.

Thanks Jason. I was too lazy to cut and paste the quotes. :)

  • I just don't see the connection between those tweets and Kona Schwenke. But it is clear that he wants to drop more weight - which could've been addressed by the staff.

And if you find me a player that is "happy" that another guy is ahead of him on the depth chart, he's lying.

So, you think he just happened to pick Kona's weight as his goal weight then? Amidst reports that Schwenke is moving ahead of him? Ok.
Sounds a lot like someone expressing sour grapes over being moved out of the starting lineup in favor of a smaller man. But it is quite possible I am reading into it too much. Battered Fan Syndrome strikes again.

Also: Let's make sure we put the opening tweet in there:
    @IrishChocolate9: Still at ND...blah

  • IrishWon,

The "starter" thing is probably about ego. At the nose guard position where you often take on double teams and are in an extremely demanding role physically, both have to play about 30-35 snaps per game, although Tuitt might eat some of them up. Ian Williams and Sean Cwynar were about half-and-half in 2010, and once Cwynar was healthy, it was similar with him and Nix.

But DL coach Mike Elston said from the outset that Nix's practice habits had to improve. It appears that might have been more than just lip service in this case.

I completely agree with you and understand your point. Hard to play that position in anything other than some sort of duo that can rotate. But, while you and I see this, it seems Mr. Nix's ego might not be so happy about the message being sent to him by the coaches.
Hopefully, it is just a blip, and everything will get smoothed over.

  • Wow. OP your headline is, how do I say it, extremely misleading. I think you are looking way way way way too into it.

  • I think they should have a different player every week start making tweets about how unhappy they are. I'm confident that sooner or later we'll be getting tweets from Kyle Brindza bitching about the color of his shoes and want to transfer to Oregon

  • Lou hit the nail on the head with this one. There is going to be
a rotation no matter who's at that position. Today's game is all
about keeping players fresh so they're able to give 100% in
the short bursts that they are on the field. In watching the drills
this spring, it is obvious that Nix is a man that is very difficult
to handle two on one let alone one on one, and this staff is just
trying to get that consistant performance out of him every play.
He will get the same if not more snaps this year when it all
shakes out, b/c he is a disruptive force when he is in there. All's
I can say is keep working on being consistant and it will work
its self out in the end.

  • He should be annoyed at himself for not being in shape. If his feelings are hurt because a coach pointed that out he's in the wrong game. I don't know that any of that is fact but nobody is going to hand him a starting spot so his feelings aren't hurt. ND has a nutritional staff. If he wants to lose weight thay should be a good resource. I've seen his practice vids and he is far from inept. Maybe, if there is a message, it's that he needs to get trimmer by August to be a #1 calibre player.

It appears that might have been more than just lip service in this case."......yeah, i think nix's attitude sucks right now. if he can't take any kind of crticisim, that would include constructive criticism from your position coach also. elston really does'nt care if nix plays at 345 or 295. the best performer will play, regardless. and that includes paractices.......
