Last year we had a decent amount of coverage about a few Irish football players who ran on the track team in the offseason. George and Josh Atkinson along with Bennett Jackson had some decent success during the Big East Indoor Track season before spring football became a higher priority.
The reason you haven't heard about their times this season is because they aren't running this year. Not even Chris Brown, a triple-jumping state champion in high school, participated in any indoor meets this year. Notre Dame said it expects to know within the next month or so if Brown or any of his teammates will by CouponDropDown">participate in any spring meets.

Lou let me ask you. What do you think the future looks like for GA3? He really didn't get as much action as I thought he would last year. Now with the talent coming in, will he be able to fill an important role? I truly believe that if Amir is healthy, he may be the household name. Thoughts anybody?

Well, he can read the papers. All of them (the track guys) have tremendous potential but need football work. Their days of rolling out of bed and beating anybody who shows up for a race are over. If you want to excel at track you need track training. They also may just need some down time from the discipline of daily practice. The path to the game day field is more crowded now and nobody cares what you did last year, good or bad. If you want game time in September you need to work and focus now.

Cary,
This is a crossroads year for GA3. He is the most experienced returning back and he has to seize the moment this spring and in August as someone the staff can consistently trust. He was about what I thought he could be last year with about 300-400 yards while playing behind Riddick and Wood.
He has to become more multi-dimensional or versatile to be more of an every-down back, not mainly a one-trick pony where you have the toss sweep and hope he gets the crease to break it. I think he has the capability to develop more, just like Riddick did this past season while busting out with a stellar senior year. Ball security, durability, pass-receiving threat, blitz pick-up ... hard to know until he actually faces it day to day.
The "starting" part is not as relevant as QB or offensive line. Like last year, you'll regularly see two or three backs every game, and the one who establishes him on a certain week, a certain defense, etc., or emerges consistently, will be the ones in there. That all has to develop in the coming months. GAIII made some pretty good progress as a running back from freshman to sophomore, and now he knows he needs to take it up another notch between sophomore and junior year.
