Notre Dame Has Impressive Major League Baseball History

  • Although Notre Dame has never been recognized as a baseball school (it did make the College World Series in 1957 and 2002), it has a pretty darn impressive history with Major League Baseball. When former Irish player A.J, Pollock made his debut with the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday night in center field, he became the 73rd Irish player to do so. Here's the top 10, according to a release by the University of Notre Dame media relations office.

Total Players in MLB History (NCAA)
    1. USC 103
    2. Texas 101
    3. Arizona State 99
    4. Stanford 83
    5. Holy Cross 77
    Michigan 77
    7. Notre Dame 73
    8. Arizona 69
    Illinois 69
    10. UCLA 68

  • Keep in mind the last MLB player to win the Triple Crown was an ND baseball player, Carl Yastrzemski. I think he went pro after two years at ND.

I believe Yaz's son plays for Vanderbilt, or used to.

  • I definitely wasn't expected to see some of the schools on that list. I'm also surprised at some that are missing. Interesting.. thank you!

Wow I need to pay more attention. I had no idea he went to ND and would of never guessed that many MLB players went to ND.

  • Ron Reed, who was best known at ND as the center on the basketball team, in the early 60s, pitched 17 years for the Braves (most of his career) and Cardinals. He also played a season or two for the Detroit Pistons. He had over 100 wins and 100 saves. Only one of 4 guys to do that, Jon Smoltz was the last.

You are right Irishmack--Yaz went pro after 2yrs at ND and then went back to school during the off seasons. He earned his degree from Merrimack College.

I was a big Yaz fan growing up and got to meet him about 10yrs ago. A friend of mine's dad worked for the Sox and introduced me to him. Once he found out that I went to ND there was no baseball talk at all! It was all ND football and the upcoming season! He is still a big fan and I think attends a game or two every year.

I was really surprised that Florida St was not on that list Lou...

  • John Axford lead baseball in saves last season went to Notre Dame,so did Brad Lidge who was perfect as the closer for the Phillies when they won the WS in 08.Criag Counsell played on 2 WSC teams with Florida and Arizona in his career.

  • Irish Pats, good call on Yaz. I remember reading a book about him and it said he did end up getting his degree, didn't know it was from Merrimack. I am a big Yaz fan too.
