Notre Dame Must Take The Dive

Minus one and maybe two of his best defensive linemen, Irish assistant Mike Elston must prepare for the nation’s third most productive running attack.

    Lou Somogyi

  • It appears they may be minus their QB.

Set your Tivo for five hours for this one. This has all the earmarks of a track meet. It is imperative that we jump out on these guys because my sense is that they will own the time of possession which will limit our opportunities.

If they get up on us that will greatly increase our chances of turnovers.

My guy tells me take Navy and the points and take the over......

  • Looks like we will be in for a long afternoon....still very worried about the mind set of the juniors and seniors after the USC game. If they are flat again...we are cooked! This is the kind of game where the coach earns his money. Let's see if coach Kelly has what it takes to get the kids ready for this one....

  • If we get beat by this Navy team - we totally suck. They have yet to beat a Division I football program this year.

This should not be about Navy - this about us finding some sack and getting it done. If this team cannot get up after last week's embarassment - forgetaboutit.

  • If this is a close one, we have more to worry about than any of us thought.

My luck w/the Irish 18-6...GO IRISH!!!

  • The 1st quarter vs SC can not be repeated against Navy. We all know that Navy's option will get yardage but ND must show intensity right from the getgo! ND must, and I believe, score in that 1st quarter - ND is too good to blankout like they did vs SC. ND must establish momentum on the opening kickoff - it's imperative for their confidence. If ND does not - Navy will smell blood and they will have the momentum. Our young Dline will be challenged therefore our Oline must establish their dominance. The 1st quarter vs Navy will set the tone/tempo in this battle. ND must take the fight to Navy. GO IRISH!!

  • I don't know. I am not very afraid of this game like some. Air Force was a much more formidable opponent. Not saying Navy is to be overlooked. I realize the D gave up some yardage to Air Force but that's gonna happen regardless. Same is going to happen with Navy. Have you guys seen their defense? It's gonna be a 500+ day I can guarantee that. All this said I would really like to see some improvement against the option. I really want to see them under 350 yards of total offense. That to me would be a very realistic goal against them.

I agree. If they are under 350 it would make me feel alot better. But I dont totally agree with Kelly's Philosophy on defensively game planning for option based teams. In that he doesnt really care about how many yards he gives up. I understand what hes saying but at the same time when you give up 500+ yds and 33 points to the last option team, only to be bailed out by a 42 point first half by your offense it makes me wonder. This Defense has not showed up in 3 games this season, and 20 games into the Kelly regime its a little alarming to me, with all the talent on that side of the ball.

  • Good read, Lou.
It seems this team is not a flat as they were last week. No comments to that effect. So would expect better intensity from the get-go.
The younger D-line guys are going to have to become more veteran-like in a hurry this week. Great experience to build on.
This game will help define the defense in the near future.
    Go Irish!

  • Why not put some of ND's backups who are smaller and quicker in to shake things up. We have guys like McDonals at LB who would be a really quick nose guard. Same could be said for Carlo and I would love to see Filer on the field. He may not practice well or something, but he always seems to make plays when he is in the game.

They beat E. Carolina. They got hosed on a TD with 0:45 left. The call was worse than the David Grimes (no TD catch) call against Stanford. The receiver took two steps, dove into the end zone, the ball came out when he landed and they said he didn't complete the motion. He took two steps from the 5. It was an amazingly bad call.

  • marklawrence... Steve Filer has been one of my favorites on this team since he stepped on campus, but he made a couple of horrible plays against SC. If it were the Navy QB getting the edge instead of Barkley, you could put another 6 on the board for the bad guys.

As I said in another post, coming off of a huge loss where we got gutted by the run against SC, we need to make sure the Freshman aren't too aggressive. They need to maintain their responsibilities all game long, and that will be real hard for 18/19 year olds who just got B-slapped the week before. If they get out of position, Teich will have another field day.

  • this game shouldn't be close. If it is we have lots of issues. We should be able to score at will like Air Force. We will give up yards and some points but we have to start winning this game convincingly again. No more excuses, it's time to get it done. With that being said it wouldn't shock me at all if we lose.lol. that should not be the case but such is the state of ND football.

  • Two points concerning USC game.

1.Notre Dame blew the bye week by using much of week one as a vacation (many players went home) rather than two weeks of preparation - call me an ogre, but sorry, no time off before USC

    2. The on campus hype overwhelmed the psyche of the overall team as they became observers

Lou hit the nail on the head earlier when he referenced how we have to learn how to elevate our intensity when playing BIG games against equal or superior opponents. Notre Dame is pissed off and Navy will feel their rath. Let's make sure we stay pissed off when we play the rest of our games, especially Stanford.

Let's put a big 'chip' on our shoulders for about 5 weeks.

agreed Filer made quite a few mistakes. Can't really recall seeing him on the field much before the USC game. Haven't seen as much of the FR Williams or Niklas lately any idea why that is staff?

According to Kelly, with Williams it's a matter of him understanding the speed/intensity of the game consistently. Plus, he's not going to play ahead of Fleming.

Niklas is behind Shembo, and against option teams you probably won't see much of either, with Slaughter and Blanton more likely lining up along the edges to help guard the option pitch.

    Lou Somogyi

  • The quickness and speed of the game is just different when you play an option team,” said Johnson. “The guys you’re going against are smaller and they might be in better shape just because they’re smaller. The speed of the game is the most important thing.”

Forget "size" against the option on the edge, you need speed. Use the nickle and the dime and just get to the option before it gets organized. Speed and players staying with their assignments is the model for success.
