Notre Dame Recruiting Revisited

Here’s a year-by-year breakdown of each Irish recruiting class in the 10-year period from 2001-10, and how many were drafted by the NFL.

  • Lou,

It's probably too delicate to be written, but it would be interesting to get your take on the biggest "bust" recruits and why you think they were busts. As a corollary, I'd like to know why ND QBs just can't seem to make it in the NFL...lately.

  • Something very disheartening in all of that, Lou, though I can't quite put my finger on it. It just seems like something is very disproportionate in the recruiting rankings and eventual performance.

    I may not be pretty, but I'm fast..... POTW 1/31/11 - 2/6/11

  • illestdomer2005,

Several years ago I put together something of that nature, although I certainly didn't term it "All Bust." Rather, it was to point out, "Look, we've heard this song and dance before. Here are reminders of how nothing is guaranteed once you get to this level." Upon further review, I thought it might have come across as a little insensitive, although it was merely meant to serve as a contrast against another all-star team I put together of unheralded Irish recruits.

I have respect for everyone who has achieved enough in his first 18 years to earn a football grant-in-aid at Notre Dame, and I understand how sometimes things don't always work out.

    HamonWry22,

That's why Signing Day really doesn't elicit much excitement from me. Since 1981, when Gerry Faust's initial recruiting haul was billed as the greatest collection of talent ever assembled (13 Parade All-Americans), it's just become an annual yawner for me. It's like people telling you how good the food is but never allowing you to sample it.

  • Lou,

What struck me is that in the 4 year period 2004 to 2007, we had
6 NFL draftees out of 78 recruits, a 7.7% rate and in the 3 year period
2004 to 2006, we had 3 draftees out of 60 recruits, a 5% rate. Not
    pretty.

  • hemy,
That explains a lot. Imagine if we never had the George O'Leary debacle.

  • What I found interesting in this draft was Boise St. Heretofore, they haven't really been draft producers. They win perennially, but it seems to defy logic. Almost like the whole is multiple times the sum of the parts. But now their kids are getting recognized. We'll see if they live up to the hype, but I found it interesting.

I also think that one of the things that has plagued ND is not only a lack of development but also a mismatch of talent. when Weiss was here, the defense seemed to frequently let down the offense. 2005 was a prime example. We could've been a NC contender with a D. Last year, our defense was pretty darn solid, but our offense couldn't put it together. ND is going to need a great offense and a great defense at the same time. For whatever reason, we haven't been able to get in sync.

  • illestdomer,

And don't forget special teams. That's usually the difference in two or three close calls per year. Imagine the 1988 campaign without Reggie Ho kicking the four field goals and Ricky Watters returning the 81-yard punt in the 19-17 win versus Michigan? Rocket Ismail turning the game around at MSU with a blocked punt. Steve Belles and Co. making the stop at midfield on 4th-and-short versus Miami with the score tied at 21-21. Etc.

Yeah, those are all great points, but I think back about the ridiculous stunts that cost us in 2005, particularly. USC got a miracle win that they probably didn't deserve. Defense played its heart out, but it was overmatched. All I remember was Brady Quinn led us to a lead only to watch Leinart pirouette his way into the end zone. We lost to MSU in OT because we let that RB run free for the game-ending score. Ohio State helped throttle our offense, but the D had no answer for Holmes and Ginn Jr. Can't remember any spectacular ST play in two of those games off the top of my head, but I know Zibby had a crucial TD return against USC.

Still, I think our ST will be great when we're fielding great offenses and defenses. GAIII gave us some breaks last year. Now, we really just need a QB.

  • Those rankings and anemic draft results certainly confrim what we've all been watching.

15 member classes unranked in the top 30 are the very picture of mediocrity.

There's no simple answer here other than winning, what with the sea change in CFB chemistry.

    Win and they will come.
