Notre Dame-UConn: Chapter III

Notre Dame cruised to an 83-59 rout of Louisville to set up another showdown with you know who in the Big East Championship on Tuesday.

  • Solid win, tonight. Much better shooting than vs. USF. They'll need all of that to get off the Big East Championship schneid vs. UConn. It's tough to beat them three in a row, particularly when it's in their backyard, and even more so when the prior two victories were by one point, and OT. The Irish played some very solid D, tonight, as they do most nights, but two keys tomorrow night are for Achonwa to avoid foul trouble, and somebody has to stick to Mosqueda-Lewis like glue on the perimeter.

  • I know this is anathema to everything competition should be ... but there is a part of me that wouldn't mind losing to UConn tomorrow. I'm just one of those people who, all things being equal, would be squeamish about facing UConn in the Final Four with a 3-0 record against them. UConn had that 3-0 mark against ND two years ago going into the Final Four and the Irish dominated.

    Georgetown-Villanova 1985, Kansas-Oklahoma 1988 ... bowl game rematches etc.

That's not how a champion is supposed to think, but that's just me thinking out loud with respect to the game's psychology between two extremely closely matched teams and the law of averages.

Then again, if you keep winning them, maybe that gets into the opponent's head. I will take an NCAA Tournament win over a Big East win any day. So would Muffet.

Lou, there's no guarantee of another ND-UConn match-up. You can only play the team who shows up tonight. Win the Big East tourney, and if there's another game with UConn, look them in the eye and say "we've got your number."

  • I know the history of not being able to beat a team 3 times but the great teams don't worry about that. If ND can beat UConn again, I am hoping that it moves UConn to the opposite side of the draw so that they wouldn't meet again unless it was the Final game. I think ND can beat Baylor but it would be alot more difficult if the had to beat UConn the game before and then face Baylor.
ND is still getting better. Ariel Braker is playing her best ball and all of a sudden Turner is asking for the ball and hitting her jumper. The younger players got some time on the floor last nigh and even though they were sloppy, just being out there was good. It will be different when it is only one of them spotting in with the starters than having an entire inexperienced unit trying work together.
As mentioned above, Achonwa has to be judicious with her defense in the first half. Dolson will hit those top of the key jumpers in the first half but not the 2nd half. This will be another bruising battle.

  • I think what everyone wants to avoid is having to go through both UConn and Baylor. Talked for Muffet a few minutes last week and I did get a sense of weariness from her of having to play UConn potentially 12 times over four years.

It's not a fear factor but more of, "Isn't there anybody else?" I'm sure my wife wonders the same thing.
