In the second of our 5-part series, we review Notre Dame’s 5-1 record against Alabama with its fourth-best victory over the Crimson Tide, 21-18, in 1976.
My most vivid memory of the game has nothing to do with the plays on the field. I remember the Alabama sidelines where most of the players wore hand warmers that looked like bright orange oven mitts. These contraptions went up to their elbows. It was a mid-November game and it was cold that day, but I wasn't that cold!
In fact, it was so warm that day — relatively speaking in northern Indiana — Irish QB Rusty Lisch left the locker room early and wasn't available for post game interviews because he wanted to hurry out to the golf course and get a few holes in while taking advantage of the balmy weather .
