Notre Dame’s QB Shuffle

Soon-to-be Notre Dame graduate Dayne Crist’s upcoming transfer continues a familiar pattern at quarterback.

  • This is quite a litany of QB recruiting successes (Quinn, Clausen, Crist, and the recent batch) and failures.

Lou, during ND's heydays, was this type of turmoil common, as well?

  • Crist certainly will go down as a quality kid that handles himself with dignity and poise. off the field.
    Bad luck on the field.
Wish him the best. Will be interesting how he does next year.

  • What a great thing to have said about you by your teammates. Way to go, Dayne Crist, he's a Notre Dame Man, for sure.

  • You are right lets give it up for Dayne Crist for how he handled himself here.

I also think its unfair to characterize this as only a QB issue. If you look at the years and the QBs that changed teams, the carousel of coaching changes had some impact on this. Each coach had their own offensive scheme. Also their ability to develop players also came into question. Lastly, I also think that some of the coaches were not necessarily the best recruiters (finding talent for all scholarships vs just the top few players)

  • Three additions to 2010:
-Danny Spond- developed into LB, has primarily played special teams with some spot LB appearances
-Luke Massa- switched to WR, has yet to see the field for the Irish
-Derek Roback- transferred to Ohio University shortly after enrolling at ND to reportedly pursue a better chance to play QB; after sitting out a year, has been converted to TE- recorded stats in 5 games this season, totaling 5 catches for 30 yards and no TDs

  • WilliamScully13,

We did include Massa among the quarterbacks, but we couldn't put Spond and Roback in that group because from the outset they were pegged to play defense.

Roback was at safety maybe a week before he decided he wanted to go elsewhere. He told us he wanted a chance to play QB. Spond also played LB from the get go and started on special teams in the 2010 opener.
