  • All in all, rankings obviously aren't the end all and be all in recruiting/developing talent.

However, I am curious on what level the "selective" approach to 2014 is being handled by the staff?

Is it "Elite" players or just our "RKG" for ND in 2014?

While I am sure this kid is incredibly talented (and by all accounts I've heard/seen this week since rumors broke of him committing that he was vastly underrated) I just can't help but wonder why they're taking verbals so early in the game if they have a reduced class and want "elite" talent.

Just somewhat surprising but I am not an expert in recruiting so all I have to go off of is word of mouth/message board or ranking services. The opinions between those two are on opposite sides of the map.

Don't just look at the number grade, look at the position ranking. OGs don't get 5* rankings and very few get 4* rankings because most are playing tackle in HS, top 10 at you're position is 'elite'. In terms of 'pretty positions' then you're correct, we've already put the breaks on Snodgrass and all QBs, RBs, and WRs will be thought over long and hard before we accept their commitment.

People use this example too much...and Manti was a 5-star -- how did he pan out?

There are far less 5-star busts than 3-stars that went on to first round greatness, per capita. I could name about thirty 3-stars on the current ND roster that never panned out.

IN my opinion ( although someone else made same point on another thread) they are looking for a recruit(s) to play guard. With many of the linemen committed for he 2013 class, the height of them favors tackle position. I think jimmy Byrne suites the guard position. As we know guards are not very highly rated and are under appreciated unlike tackles. I do believe he is a ND "RKG" 1) Saint Ign is very good academic school and from my understanding he is good student. 2) year in and year out St Ign is one of the top football programs in the state of ohio and sometimes Nationally. He has seen some great competition.
No interms of elite players. The staff is still going after those but I believe they are going after elite talent at the skills position and on the defensive side of the ball. Lets face it ND is now build to defend and run the ball so keys in recruiting are Defense and o-line.

  • Dayne Crist? All in all, I am sure that our #4 for 2014 is a great addition that wants to play at ND.

Chris Brown (a work in progress, but seeing time as a frosh with high upside). Zack Martin (one of most consistent OT in the country). Golden Tate (one of the best WRs in ND history/Belitnikof winner). Prince Shembo. Darius Fleming (until his Army AA game boosted his stock late). Ian Williams (NFL DT). Kapron Lewis-Moore (in some services). Theo Riddick. Zeke Motta. Matthias Farley.
We could do this for days. My point is...do you want a team full of elite players like USC this year? Or do you want a team that is balanced with elite HS talents, RKGs that work their arses off but also have great upside and frames as deemed by the coaching staff, and leaders with great physical talents...that happen to being playing for a National Championship?
I've started to trust the ND coaches on this one.

Golden Tate? He was the #11 overall player per ESPN and a high 4-star on Rivals.

I get what you're saying but most of the guys you cited were highly recruited/ranked...

That ranking of Tate was quite late in the process. He was most definitely a 3-star RB/athlete earlier in the season. that's what separate the coaching staffs that are the best evaluators and know who and how they can develop them. We have a number of very talented "late bloomers" on this team and appearingly/hopefully so in the '13 class that ND was one of the first national reaching team to start talking to. Kids rremember that.

Well said, Byrne was Urban Meyer's first offer to any kid in Ohio for the 2014 class. Love getting back into Iggy, will be watching to see if we offer his teammate as well.

Wow, didn't even know that. As awful as Meyer is he knows talent, that's for sure.

In general true but not so much for offensive lineman - look at the first round draft picks in the NFL over the last few years and their recruiting rankings and you'll find an abundance of three and even two star recruits.

2012 - Matt Kalil (5), David DeCastro (3), Riley Reiff (3), Jonathan Martin (3), Kevin Zeitler (3), Amini Silatolu (2 out of JUCO)
2011- Tyron Smith (5), Anthony Castonzo (2), Mike Pouncey (4), Gabe Carimi (3), Nate Solder (3), Derrick Sherrod (4), Marcus Cannon (3)
2010- Trent Williams (3), Russell Okung (3), Bryan Bulaga (4), Anthony Davis (4), Mike Iupati (2), Charles Brown (3), Maurkice Pouncey (4)

So in total last three years:

    2 star or lower - 3
    3 star- 10
    4 star- 5
    5 star- 2

O-Line is just harder than many other positions to project from the HS (where kids with elite size can easily dominate) to college, where technique and development are critical. I trust the evaluations of good coaches more than the rankings.

Not for nothing, but I'm more concerned what the coaching staff thinks of a kid more than a internet service. No offense. So if Kelly is taking his commitment, they must feel he is elite and thats all I need to hear.

Also, I know he is listed at 6'4, but a national recruiter from TOS has seen him a couple times and says he is every bit 6'5- 6'6.
