In general true but not so much for offensive lineman - look at the first round draft picks in the NFL over the last few years and their recruiting rankings and you'll find an abundance of three and even two star recruits.
2012 - Matt Kalil (5), David DeCastro (3), Riley Reiff (3), Jonathan Martin (3), Kevin Zeitler (3), Amini Silatolu (2 out of JUCO) 2011- Tyron Smith (5), Anthony Castonzo (2), Mike Pouncey (4), Gabe Carimi (3), Nate Solder (3), Derrick Sherrod (4), Marcus Cannon (3) 2010- Trent Williams (3), Russell Okung (3), Bryan Bulaga (4), Anthony Davis (4), Mike Iupati (2), Charles Brown (3), Maurkice Pouncey (4)
So in total last three years:
2 star or lower - 3 3 star- 10 4 star- 5 5 star- 2
O-Line is just harder than many other positions to project from the HS (where kids with elite size can easily dominate) to college, where technique and development are critical. I trust the evaluations of good coaches more than the rankings.
