  • I had the pleasure of attending a Gala in her honor, along with Bobby Knight, for the V Foundation.
    Not only was she one of the greatest coaches in women's BB, but a classy lady as well.
    I wish her well. She's got a tough road ahead.

  • ND basketball coach Muffet McGraw released a statement to the media this afternoon regarding Summitt's decision:

    "While I'm certainly sad to hear that Pat is stepping down as the head coach at the University of Tennessee, I think today is really a time to celebrate Pat's amazing accomplishments and everything she has done to help bring the sport of women's basketball to where it is today.

    "The word 'legend' can sometimes be overused in sports, but in Pat's case, that's exactly what she is. Pat has set the bar so high for all of us, not only with the success her teams have enjoyed on the court, but the way she has carried herself off the court, with such class, dignity and grace. It's a standard of excellence that likely will never be matched in our game, and I feel fortunate and honored to have had the opportunity to coach against her, and to learn from her during my career. All of us at Notre Dame wish for her good health and happiness in her new role as head coach emeritus at Tennessee. We know that the Lady Vol program will remain strong and vibrant with Holly Warlick as head coach, and we wish her much success."

  • The first women's basketball game I covered was ND-Tennessee in 1991, and it was the first sell-out at ND for a women's game. Tennessee was the superpower and ND was trying to build under Muffet McGraw (it finished 14-17 that year). The Irish were stoked and took the Vols to the wall before losing, 85-82.

    Afterwards, Pat Summitt was gracious about Notre Dame's effort, but when she was asked if this is a sign that the Irish were building something special, she gave an answer I'll always remember, and I paraphrase: "Let me ask this: Is this how they always play? It's easy to prepare and be ready for us, because everyone wants to knock us off. The real test comes when you have to prepare every day like you're playing a champion, because very few are committed to preparing every day like a champion.

    "So if this is how they play regularly, yes, they might be on the way. But you are better able to evaluate a program based on its consistency of attitude toward competition."

    It was beautiful. Right then I understand why she was so successful.

    Thanks for sharing Lou! I had the honor of hearing Pat Summitt speak at my companies(Northwestern Mutual) 2005 Annual Meeting. The group of speakers for that meeting were George H.W. Bush, Stephen Covey, and Summitt. She really stood out even in elite company.
