The first women's basketball game I covered was ND-Tennessee in 1991, and it was the first sell-out at ND for a women's game. Tennessee was the superpower and ND was trying to build under Muffet McGraw (it finished 14-17 that year). The Irish were stoked and took the Vols to the wall before losing, 85-82.
Afterwards, Pat Summitt was gracious about Notre Dame's effort, but when she was asked if this is a sign that the Irish were building something special, she gave an answer I'll always remember, and I paraphrase: "Let me ask this: Is this how they always play? It's easy to prepare and be ready for us, because everyone wants to knock us off. The real test comes when you have to prepare every day like you're playing a champion, because very few are committed to preparing every day like a champion.
"So if this is how they play regularly, yes, they might be on the way. But you are better able to evaluate a program based on its consistency of attitude toward competition."
It was beautiful. Right then I understand why she was so successful.
