OT - The greatest Sports events that we have attended?

  • That link on the Miracle on Ice got me thinking about the what game/s or events I have been fortunate to attend. In no particular order:

    * One game of the 1957 World Series (Milwaukee Braves vs Yankees)
    * 1965 NFL Championship. Packers beat Cleveland in Green Bay
    * 1978 Muhammed Ali defeating Leon Spinks in New Orleans to win the title for 3rd time
    * 1980 Winter Olympics
    * 1996 Summer Olympics
    * ND vs UCLA 2006 (not a big game in the scope of things nationally) but WOW!
    * 4 different National Championships games
    * Two NCAA Final Fours (Syracuse in 2004 and Kentucky in 2012)
    * Two Superbowls (Packers 1997 and Patriots 2002). Sold my tickets this year (disinterested)
    * The Masters in 1994, 95 & 96

    Living in New Orleans for the past 17 years has been great. It's a sports mecca for big time events. Fingers crossed here for the lady Irish to make it here in April. That will determine if I use my tckets or give them away :).

    edoyle, I also went to a game in the 1957 World Series, at Yankee Stadium, game 6.

    Great events I've seen..

    Belmont Stakes when Affirmed beat Alydar by a nose for the 3rd Jewel and won the Triple Crown.

    1963 game 1 of World Series when Koufax struck out 15 Yankees to set a new one game record (later broken by Bob Gibson).

    1962 NFL Championship game at Yankee Stadium...Packers beat the Giants..LG Jerry Kramer kicked 3 FGs.

    *Most striking game I ever saw was December 1969, NY Knicks against Detroit Pistons at MSG..The Knicks had won the first 18 games of their season and this was game 19 (Knicks would win the Title that year) and the Knicks were flat and the Pistons couldn't miss. With 2 minutes to go and the Knicks down 12 and out of it (no 3 pt shots) the crowd stood and gave them a standing ovation for getting off to such a great start. *

  • Browns overtime win over Jets in playoffs (Kosar sets playoff record for yard thrown) and the breaking of the UCLA streak ( no need to give details on the obvious)would be my top 2. There are other great games and memorable moments I have seen such as AC's last home game for the Irish.

    Gulinias

  • Aside from ND games it would be.

    -IU vs Kentucky in Sweet 16 last year in Atlanta (even though IU lost)
    -IU vs Michigan 2-2-13 (loudest I've ever seen Assembly Hall)
    -Indy 500 (go every year)
    -Will be attending the IU @ Minnesota game on Tuesday and looking forward to seeing a game in The Barn.

  • I've been fortunate to attend many great games--pro and college, including many great ND games. But my favorite event has to be the infamous "tuck rule game" between the Patriots and Raiders. It was a Saturday night, the last game in the old stadium, and snowing throughout. The whole game had a carnival feel to it.

    The kick by Viniatari to tie the game was the most amazing thing that I have ever seen in person--or at least witnessed. The snow was coming down so bad at that point that we couldn't see anything once the ball left the holder's hands. We just watched the referees under the goal post and the fans reaction in the end zone! When he hit the second one to win it the place went nuts. I don't think I've ever seen a post-game parking lot quite like that night.

    May your neighbors respect you, Trouble neglect you, The angels protect you, And heaven accept you.

    Isn't that the game (play) that just before he kicked, the Pats sent a small tractor out and plowed the snow away so the holder could get a good spot?

    psdo51,

    No that was against Miami back in the early '80's, another snow game. Ron Meyer was the coach. They had astro turf back then. During time outs they had a John Deere come out and clean off the 10yd markers. The score was 0-0 near the end and Meyer called a time out. He then instructed the driver to clear off a path where the holder was, and John Smith kicked the only points of the game to win it. What made it more interesting was that the driver, Mark Henderson was on a prison release program.

    This personal achievement......reminded me of another spectator highlight. I have been a Red Sox fan since 1967 when I went to my first game in Fenway Park on Cardinal Cushing's birthday. (There were a couple of thousand nuns in the stands!) And if you became a Red Sox fan in 1967....your boyhood idol was Carl Yastrzemski - "the man they call Yaz". I knew every single word of the "Impossible Dream" LP that came out after their improbable worst to first season.

    Yaz retired on October 1st, 1983 - and my family and I missed my Uncle's wedding to be in Fenway that weekend. I still have the ticket stubs, the poster, and the pictures of Yaz running around the field thanking the fans. I was a young adult of 24 - but I remember thinking that was the day "my childhood ended" - the day my boyhood hero retired.

    I am sure Yankee fans think the same of Mickey Mantle's retirement, or Cardinal fans of Stan the Man.

    I have been fortunate and am in awe of so many of the great games attended by so many of the posters. As a kid growing up in Milwaukee and living withing walking distance of County stadium we spent many days in the .25 bleachers seeeing such greats as Aaron, Matthews, Spahn, Musial, Mays, Clemente, Koufax, Drysdale, Banks and .................well you get the picture. Baseball in the 50's 60's was so incredible!! I was at the Georgia vs ND Sugar Bowl in 1980 but I had a hard time listing an Irish loss as a big game, but it did decide the NC.
