OT-relocating insight

  • I was told this Wednesday that my plant is shutting down, a bottle manufacturer. I've been given the possibility to relocate and was just asking for any knowledge of a couple towns in which I may go if I choose. This board is loaded with good people and from everywhere in the country so if any could give any feedback on these areas I'd greatly appreciate it. thanks everyone.

  • Thanks Bob, I appreciate that. I believe I will be ok, I most likely will have a job within the co. but will just have to relocate which isn't the end of the world at all.

Batavia seems nice, plus it's only 2.5hrs from ND... I live only about 2hrs from the other possibility i may have in Allentown PA.

  • Billy Joel said they were closing all the factories down in Allentown...

Seriously, no idea about either town, but I will be praying the Lord directs your path. Pray and be united with your family about your decision. Blessings to you guys.

My luck w/the Irish 18-6...GO IRISH!!!

    simm

  • Simm thank you.

I was told of another possibilty today as well, so hopefully something comes of the 3 I've been told of so far. My plant intends on staying open until 12/31 of this year

  • I am some what familiar with Batavia and it is a very nice town. You couldn't go wrong by relocating there.

    pem55

  • I agree with pem55, Batavia is a very nice town. There are also several other nice towns near Batavia.

I take it you are from Naperville - great town!!
If it was up to me, I'd go the Batavia route.

    PBeuerlein

  • Batavia itself is fairly industrial. However, there are a lot of nice communities to live in right around the area. St. Charles and Geneva is nice, and Naperville is very close by as well.

I don't know much about Allentown, PA, but Batavia seems a nice choice, and there are plenty of nice places to live by. Plus 2.5 hrs to ND is AWESOME!

  • i live near allentown/ bethlehem and honestly it is awesome...... great schools in the suburbs, plenty of activities..........about 50 mins to philly and 90 mins to NYC from where i live........i could give you reams of info if you are interested.......good luck!!!!!!

  • Thanks guys, and yes Batavia does seem to have some nice areas around it.
Is anyone familiar with Des Plaines or it's nearby towns? I've got a phone interview with one of our other plants there which hopefully could turn into a visit out there. I've got some thinking to do. I live in south jersey now so I'm guessing the winters would be a big change to say the least.

  • My girlfriend is from Bethlehem/Allentown, PA. Nice place. Way too many Eagles fans. But always go the closest-to-Notre Dame route.

  • Well still working at the plant, should be another 4-6weeks. I'm expecting an official offer letter within the next week or so for one of our other plants thats located about 5 miles south of Wilkes Barre,PA.

Anyone have any knowledge of the area that may help? I'm going to have to move since it's about 2.5hrs from where I live now. I appreciate the help everyone.

  • Domer, tough choices ahead for you. I'm somewhat familiar with the Wilkes-Barre area, in that I spent two yrs. going to college at Kings College (same order of brothers that runs ND btw), and my dad was born and raised in and around the immediate Wilkes-Barre area. I do know that when the Susquehanna floods, it can be devastating to the entire region. If you're gonna be south enough, you're probably at higher elevation and should be safe. Not an economically booming area, but a good solid 'Blue Collar' region, with a strong Notre Dame fan base. Not far from Montage Mountain (ski resort) and also home of the Yankees AAA affiliate. Which may be reason enough for a Philadelphian to NOT live there! It is also not far from Pottsville, which is the home of Yuengling Brewery. Hope this helps. All things being equal, the closer to Notre Dame the better.

  • I live close to Batavia. Nice town, and we actually looked there for a house. Very nice area around there. Schools are good. Not sure if you have kids, but the Geneva and Batavia hs football teams are usually really good. Plus there are a couple of smaller towns close by if you prefer something not a busy. My wife wants to move to Geneva in a few years, so maybe we could meet up for some ND and beers. Good luck with your search.

The only thing I know is that Wilkes-Barre isn't pronounced at all the way I think it should be... But you and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers as you make the transition!

  • Either place would be a nice spot. From Chicago area myself and wifes family was from just outside Allentown. As far as scenery, Allentown hands down. But as IFR pointed out rabid Eagles fans, even worse though I have run into alot penn state fans in the area. Although I imagine some of the starch has been taken out of their sails. (Not meant to be a cheepshot.) They are a tough fanbase to be around I have found through some friends. Now that is not a reason to pick a family destination but during football season it can be awful tough.
Prayerfully consider the options and will pray for you also.

Grew up in Naperville tight next door to Batavia. Great town, great schools, park district, downtown area. Many nice towns around like Geneva, St. Charles and Wheaton.

  • I live in Scranton, roughly 45 minutes from Allentown, there are some really nice parts to the city, decent downtown, the croc rock gets a steady flow of good concerts, nothing major but it's a cool rock club, the city disclose to the scranton, Wilkes-barre and the poconos, if there are any particular questions feel free to msg, I'm new to posting but I frequent the site everyday. GO IRISH!!

Sorry to hear that. I'd love to help, but I haven't spent any time in either place. Batavia would be a quicker drive to South Bend, isn't that all that matters? biggrin Wherever it is, I hope you land on your feet. Best wishes.
