  • Great to get a dominant win over an overmatched opponent. But...

This is a team we should have scored 50 on. Rees is still Rees. The kid limits our offense because he just can't run.
We have a great offense between the 20's but red zone is awful.

If you are Hendrix or his father you have to be asking why he didn't play tonight. If not now, when? I hope he likes medical
school because you just told the kid he won't see the field.

Theo Riddick. What the F have we done with this kd? We were worried about using him too much. I'm worried we need to
    file a missing persons report.

Rueffer? bad. Punt returns? bad. Bridza can't kick deep anymore. Not good. Kick coverage blows. Concerned.

I think those are fair questions and observations. Winning is great but this game sure created a litany of questions.

So much for dominating your opponent, having NO turnovers with a win on the road against your in-state rival.

    ND Q

  • While this was our most complete of the season. We had a couple of breaks when Purdue dropped some INTs and we fell on our fumbles, but, we were due those considering the bad luck we've had with TOs.

We did leave some points on the field, though, and our special teams is the worst in the entire country due to several reasons. Poor KO coverage last night, Ruffer missing 5 of his last 8 FGs. Only 3 PR yards for the entire season. This unit is worse under Elston than it ever was under Polian and my only concern is that in a close game it will be the difference between winning and losing. Is it time to see Taush?

My luck w/the Irish 18-6...GO IRISH!!!

  • It was a dominant win but it should have been. I also wondered about Riddick. Rees played a good game. I think getting Crist in the game was a good move. The QB problem is that Rees can't run which is a big part of Kelly's offense. Thats a simple fact so the Rees lovers can say what they want. We don't really know what Hendrix can do and it looks like we may never find out. Over 500 yards of offense in 3 of 5 games!!! Not bad.

Wow - this is the first rocking chair game we have had in a while, and people still complain. As if perfection is the goal. Rees was tremendous last night - not perfect, just merely tremendous. The running game outstanding. The Defense - tough. Ok - special teams still needs some work.

But wow - to start with complaints on a 28 point win on the road - go beat your dog, and pistol whip your kids....to get out your frustration over such a tough game.

  • A win is a win?? Purdue is a very bad team. We did great with Turnovers today because we recovered the Two fumbles with one being Rees handing off to the hip of Gray! It is NOT being 'negative' it is being factual!! Here are OBVIOUS concerns with our team. If we are happy beating the Purdues of CFB and Heart attacks with very average teams like Pitt than we will NEVER compete for a National Championship!!
    1) How can EVERY team we play have better special teams than we do?
    2) Why are we wasting scholarships on LS??
    3) Rees gets the 'hall pass' but Riddick gets pulled from PR?
    4) Goodman has negative yardage and will NEVER break one and many times fails to make the catch the ball and we lose 20 yards!
    5) Our kickoffs are just like the past- kickoffs to the 20 yard line?? What happened to this 'weapon'?
Unless we fix these just to AVERAGE we will NEVER take this team to the 'next level'
I watch as many games as anyone on the weekend and there is NOT one team that I see that has special teams worse than ours!! That is including many schools in the MAC!!!

  • Jimbo - I think you bring up some very valid points, and hopefully many issues will continue to improve. It is a little hard to be too critical of Rees after this game. He didn't need to run, and for the most part his passing was very good.

Riddick is a concern. He is billed as dynamite in a bottle, but someone has forgotten to take the cap off the bottle. Great win. Go Irish!!!!

  • When you play a team like Purdue, it's a no-win situation. You're supposed to dominate them, so when you do, you've merely met expectations. It's virtually impossible to exceed them. The better the team plays, the worse you think Purdue must be. If ND didn't dominate, it would have been fire on brimstone raining down on here. It wasn't a perfect game, but they did exactly what they were supposed to do. Finding fault is fine, but similar faults could be found in a 17-16 win over Alabama, only we wouldn't be talking about them. So, by all means, be critical, but just keep in mind that the next perfect game any team plays will be the first.

  • I actually nodded off for about 10 minutes in the 4th quarter. You know what that tells me? Notre Dame did what they had to do and put this game away early. Good job, I needed the rest after the first four games.

  • bfinch:

There is little question that I'm a prick. Apparently Brian Kelly is a bit of prick as well.

I think fair criticism of our team is necessary to get to the BCS level. I think we can agree that Riddick is invisible, Rueffer suddenly has issues, Bridza couldn't reach the end zone and Rees is limited. These are the same complaints I voiced last week. Rees is fine but we continue to struggle mightily in the red zone. I'm glad we no longer struggle with the Purdue's of the world. My concern is that this dog won't hunt against top tier BCS teams.

    Kelly's observations:

“We haven’t arrived,” Kelly said. “In close games missing an easy field goal and not being able to score seven (in the red zone) ? those concern me. I’m not going to sound like sour milk, but we’ve got to put more points on the board when we have those opportunities.”

  • FIVE different players scored TD's for the Irish last night. I understand the concern that we're not getting the ball to Riddick as much as we think we should be... and I know you can argue that Rees has his own favorites... but when you have five different guys in different positions able to put up TD's it's really hard to complain that we aren't spreading the ball around enough. Clearly Riddick had too much on his plate in the beginning. If the coaches thought he was ready to get a ton of work again, he would be. We still have more than half a season of football left to go. When you've got Floyd, Jones, and Eifert all doing really well in the receiver role, and you've got two very capable RBs also putting points on the board, is it that much of a concern? Floyd was in single coverage most of the night. Of course we're going to work that. There's a lot of football left to play. Theo will get his shot.

I do wish Hendrix could have taken a few snaps. Of course Dayne wants in... but how meaningful is that for anyone really?

Brindza was averaging about 70 yards per kick before this game. I don't think it's really fair to say he can't get the job done anymore, as if this one day was definitive of his ability forever. People have off days. Maybe this was just one of them. To me the Ruffer situation is of much more concern than Brindza at this point.

Overall, it was a very solid win and one that didn't have any of us freaking out at the last minute. I'd call that a success.
