On Gunner Kiel...

  • I received a call roughly 60 minutes ago from a source close to the program that said quarterback Gunner Kiel was looking to transfer, but the confidence level wasn't high enough where I felt comfortable putting it out there at this time.

We're checking with additional sources on this to get an updated word, but I can share that there was heavy talk about this within the program today - as I was told he was looking to participate in spring ball to finish up the semester and then explore other options.

We'll provide the latest we get, but wanted our board to know that I did have a conversation with someone connected to the program about this earlier today.

    UPDATE at 7:53 p.m.

Just checked in with another source (I know, everyone loves that word) close to the program and was told the following.

    "He's out."

Based on what I'm told, Kiel notified Brian Kelly of his intentions today, but release papers haven't been signed yet.

More VIP info to come in this thread...

He was going to sit behind Golson for the next 3 years...it was expected. I just hope our buddy NDGUYinFL is alright because he loved Gunner more than anybody.

I'm on his side on this one. I like Gunner a lot. I think he could have beat out Golson. This is a big loss if only because he would have been a stud backup if nothing else.

    '85,

The next time I question one of your postings, please send
me an email whispering "gunner; gunner" and I will promptly
    acknowledge my error.

Honestly, thank God for National Signing Day, the one bright
moment in an otherwise forgettable winter (football-wise).

  • I don't blame the kid at all...he wants to play and that doesn't look likely with the way Golson played last season. Best of luck to him, just don't go to anyone we play!

  • if kiel does end up transferring, does it not seem like this was written on the wall since he switched last minute as an EE? i had high hopes for him, as i prefer that type of QB.

  • I just wonder why now. He's going to have to sit another year, when he could have played possibly. More importantly why would he stay for spring practice? I wouldn't give him any reps if i knew he was going to transfer. Why take reps away from the guys who are staying.

  • There's no way he would have beaten out Golson, but I do agree that it's a major loss for the program. Thank God for Tommy Rees.

  • Disappointed. I think Kiel has what it takes to start for Notre Dame and I'd like to see him get that shot. Not a knock on Golson by any means as I am a big fan of his as well. But I think Kiel could do some special things with his size and skills in this offense. I guess we'll never know.

  • If he makes the move, best of luck to him. I'd like to assume he's doing this with some feedback from the staff regarding his playing time prospects, for next year and beyond.

That is so far from the truth. Golson is great but he leaves a lot to be desired.

Thanks 76. I am taking this one rough. Feel like my puppy just died. I want Gunner to know I will support him wherever he goes, but my heart will always belong to ND. I wish he'd reconsider because I really believe he will push EG and he's one injury from Wally Pipp'ing Golson. I feel he provides a lot of qualities that EG doesn't, won't, and can't. Now we will never know. I hope Zaire is ready to step in early because he may have to if something happens. Come on Dawkins! We really need you to commit and sign now.

As I posted on the other thread, I'm going to have to take a leave of absence to gather my thoughts.. So many things going through my head. I don't know what to do, what to believe. *Sigh*

My parting thought will be I always told you all he would be Irish. I never would've thought it would be for only one year though.. I'm hurting.. Sad.. Disappointed.

I'd be willing to bet big money, if the staff thought Kiel was close to Golson they would have made that crystal clear to him, and he would have at least waited until after spring ball to make the move.

  • If he is going to participate in Spring ball, he might change his mind. Where is he going to go? He will have to sit out another year and then hope he hasn't been jumped during the '13 season. It's very possible by the end of Spring that he is a strong #2 and that would put him a mild injury away from starting at Notre Dame. If I were him (easy for me to say) I would stick it out this year. Worst case, he would have 2 and maybe 3 years left and he might end up being the starter for a variety of reasons. How would he feel if he left and Golson gets injured opening day? 12 games is a long time and while I understand that you only go around once in life, it doesn't always go in a straight line.

We'll provide the latest we get, but wanted our board to know that I did have a conversation with someone connected to the program about this earlier today.

Since Jason has stated that someone close to the program indicated that
there was "heavy talk" about Gunner transferring within the program today and
another site is confident enough to announce it, I think we had best be ready
    to have it officially confirmed.

The biggest question I have is why? Admittedly, Gunner would enter spring
ball as QB number 4, behind starter Everett, "fireman" Tommy and occasional
substitute Andrew. I would have thought he rapidly would become our number
2 and challenge Everett. But, before this can ever take place, he leaves. And,
    to go where?

Hello! Gunner. There is no program in America where you will not have
competition, where you will not have to go out and prove you're better than
the incumbents and others ahead of you on the depth chart. I simply can
not understand why he chose to leave rather than take on the challenge.

There is one other thing I'd like to know----how in the world did USC
stack-up 5-star quarterbacks like proverbial hotcakes under Pete Carroll?
Quality QBs after quality QBs were willing to "bide their time." Evidently,
no so at ND this year.
