    I haven't posted much over the summer, but I've read some of the articles and checked the board once in a while and tried to keep up with things, and now the wait for the new season is almost over!

    Here Come the Irish!

    The Irish should field a solid team, a more-than-decent team, but just how much more than decent/

    That's what we get to find out on Saturday!!

    The Irish will run, they'll pass, they'll stop the run, they'll sack the QB and they'll emerge victorious!!

  • I don't think that we will find out too much on this Saturday. It will most likely be sloppy, basic and there will definately be some mental/nervous mistakes. South Florida will come in with the 'nothing to lose' attitude and probably keep it pretty close in the first half... possibly even winning then. After the first half, I expect ND to take control of the game on offense and defense, but I still don't expect fireworks on the scoreboard.

    With that being said, I just want to see ND win and be better prepared for Michigan the following week. That is when we will find out what this team is made of.

    Your prediction for how the game will go could very well turn out to be accurate - but we'll have to wait and see if that's what happens, and for now I'm going to believe that IF Brian Kelly is as good of a coach as people keep claiming he is, then the Irish will field a team that is ready to go and that plays well overall.

    That's not to say that there won't be a mistake or two, but I have to believe that they're going to play well enough so that they won't be characterized as "sloppy" (especially for an entire half of a game).

    It's his job to have the team ready and, as fans, I think we should expect the team to be ready to go. If they play "sloppy" or if they barely squeak by USF, then perhaps the boost to Coach Kelly's credibility from the four-game winning streak at the end of last season will turn out to be a temporary blessing for him? Hopefully we won't have to find out. Hopefully the Irish will come out motivated, focused and effective!

  • I agree with you King, for the most part. Maybe sloppy was a little harsh, but I don't expect them to dominate USF, especially in the first half. I also don't expect ND to show their hand in this game too much... they will most likely hold a little bit back for Michigan if they can.

    But, I really think that the most important part of the first game is to win. If ND dominates... great. If they squeek by... fine. As far as the first games go, I just don't think that you can read too much into how good this team is going to be from how well they play in the first game... good or bad.

    I totally agree in that you shouldn't form too solid of an opinion without much evidence - and one game alone isn't a whole lot of evidence. I'm just hoping they start strong and keep the ball rolling, and hopefully we start with a "W!"

  • we should get a good idea at how mentally prepaired the team is in that first half. That all comes from Kelly too, how the last two weeks of practice went will be very visible during the 1/2nd quarter. Kelly preaches Mental Toughness, which really helped improved ND in the penalty department so I think that first and 2nd quarter will give a good indication of how the team has approached this game and how they have done managing outside expectations.

    It think its fine to think your good, that your going to win a championship, but how you act and go about your buisness to make sure your as good as you think you are is what determines a successful season, luckly we have a guy who is pretty good at prepairing his teams to win.
