POTW

  • It was a good week to be a POTW analyst. There were a number of very strong threads. Any week that features the return of IFR is always going to be a good week, and his post was a beauty. J_Law had some terrific posts. Hemy, bndally, and bailey mcintosh (apologies for possible spelling errors) were predictably very strong. Old reliables like IrishWon, Irish13, and the ever inquisitive, Irishm, helped advance the ball. I also found two lines worthy of L(ine)OTW, one by NDfan76, at the beginning of an excellent post, when he said something to the effect that analysis of the ND quarterback situation should be sponsored by Pepto Bismol, and then Jiggafini called discussion of the same, "low hanging fruit". I'd like to think we've picked every apple off that tree, but I'm betting we haven't.

Anyhow, the best thread of the week was the one about the ND program not being in "shambles". On that, we had some superb contributions by the always excellent Risksorter, the always witty GIGA and some guy named Lou, whose last name looks like a line on an eye chart. However, I've heard he's not eligible for this because he's forfeited his amateur status, Risk loses this one in a photo, and GIGA doesn't get it because he enjoys bacon too much. I do have my standards.

Of course, that means the winner is the originator of the thread, Mr. Rice. Now as a pig, I'm obviously partial to grain, but that's not why he won. His post was outstanding and jump-started some of the finest discussion we've had on this board. Congratulations, Mr. Rice, or Senor Arroz, for our Hispanic brethren. You brought some serious wisdom to the table. Now, you get to take notes all week, and confer the honor on a successor, next week.

  • What an honor. To be named the POTW by the pig of all pigs is like having a trophy presented to you by Ghandi. I humbly accept this...oh...he picked Rice.

Congrats, Mr. Rice. A most deserved choice.

I'm sorry, Merlin, did I forget to mention you? Let me review my notes.

    Nope.

Better luck next week. Can't believe how your name just keeps slipping through the cracks each week.

Now, as I was saying, congratulations to Mr. Rice.

  • Eating vast amounts of bacon should've tipped the scales to me under normal circumstances but it's hard to argue Mr. Rice's selection. This week was won in a landslide despite a good week overall.

  • Excellent choice as usual HOW22. Congratulations to Mr. Rice for a wonderful post--its too bad that
the subject matter is not obvious to all. Ham, all you have to do to link one of my favorite
quotations from Lou Holtz to your handle is to eliminate one of your 2s: you would then
be known as HOW2WIN. But, then, you already thought of that.

Actually, I didn't Hemy. I'm definitely not that clever.

I forgot to mention, I did get a letter of endorsement for you as POTW, signed by Pete Sampson and all your friends at Rivals, who wish you nothing but a long and fruitful posting career over here.

  • Well, what can I say? I am humbled. Being simply honest, this is the best Notre Dame discussion board in the business. It's the only place I've found where reasonable discussion actually prevails. You can find a bit of it elsewhere, but it's so thinly woven into the "in your face animosity" of malcontents that it's not worth wading though the manure to find the crop.

Anyway, thanks to all of you. I've been bleeding blue and gold all my life. I once drove to Warsaw (Indiana) from San Francisco because the Alabama-Notre Dame wasn't televised out there (these were bc -- before cable -- days). It never dawned on me I might get it in Colorado or somewhere else along the way. Anyway, I drove 42 straight hours to get home about 15 minutes before kickoff, got myself some game time refreshments, sat down to watch the game and fell fast asleep. I missed the entire game!!!

Another of my favorite Irish stories was playing in a charity golf tournament with Moose Krause. Moose was but a few years from death at the time. He had always been my father's idol. Dad came out to walk the tournament because Moose was there, and I told Moose how dad had always felt about Notre Dame and, of course, about him. Moose said he wanted to meet him, so I introduced them. Salutations out of the way, Moose then invited Dad to ride around the course with him, leaving me to walk. The two of them laughed and giggled and guffawed the entire round away. Dad later told me it was the greatest day of his life. Moose apologized after the round. I never could figure out why. He had done me the greatest favor possible.

But, enough of my reminiscences. I thank you for this, Ham. For future reference, however, I must confess the consumption of BLT's on an all too regular basis. I blame it on my dad cooking many of my most beloved pets when I was a youngster, and never having had a pig that I particularly liked. Naturally, this has now changed, as pigs have advanced substantially on my personal pecking order. I have instructed my wife to pick up some turkey bacon for us to try. I'm not expecting much, but I suppose it's better than eating a buddy's brother.

Regarding the responsibility of picking next week's POTW, is there any way I can defer to another? I truly appreciate the honor, but the reason I rarely post is that I have very, very little time to be here. I run a company, have lots of church duties and am trying to raise a 9 year old son at age 63. Beyond that, I have to keep the old golf game from deteriorating still further. Without much time on the board, I don't think I can really give our many fine posters the consideration they all deserve. Let me know.

    Thanks again,

    Senor Arroz

  • Good stuff, M-R. Turkey bacon is a win-win proposition. Your curriculum vitae eerily resembles my own, though I started a little earlier to now have a 15-year old, and sold a business, so I could concentrate on golf, which, to date, has not produced the desired results. We diverge at the intersection of Church and Track, though I readily admit to invoking the name of the Lord in prayerful fashion when my horse is in a three-way photo. Glad you bleed blue and gold, and I understand the constraints upon your time. IrishBob normally has the POTW's back in such matters. Unless we hear otherwise, he'll probably be able to pinch hit for you this instance.
