Part II Survey: Who Will Start & Finish At QB?

  • 1, Rees
    2. Rees

With Goulson making a move late in the season.

Reason: If Crist and Rees are 'tied' ... it goes to Rees. When he is in - the team responds. Saw more leadership under adversity from Rees during the last four games than I saw from Crist in either of the last two years as QB.

Hodges ... of course Kelly played Crist with first team in the spirng .. had to give him time to get rhythm back after injury.

    irishjim,

My feeling is Crist gets the call, but with a short leash. Rees is the next man in, and from what I've seen in Kelly's history, he's not afraid to apply the hook.` Basically, those two are 1A and 1B.

It seems to me Brian Kelly really wants to get Golson on the field, but my feeling is Hendrix is the wild card who will be inserted at some point even in the opener, either to run the Leprecat or another package in a favorable situation.

I remember in 1980 the masterful job Bill Walsh did of breaking in second-year QB Joe Montana at San Fran. Steve DeBerg was the starter, but Walsh gave Montana packages in the red zone that resulted in success and gradually built his confidence. By the 12th game, he took over as the starter. I can see Kelly doing that with Hendrix and Golson if they taste success and neither Crist or Rees provide the all-around package or consistency he wants. That's not to say either Golson or Hendrix will be just inserted in red zone situations, or that Crist and Rees won't thrive.

This way, Kelly keeps a lot of options open. Crist gets that second huge chance in his career because he has the best combination of physical talent and accrued knowledge. Rees is a proven insurance policy in waiting for the full-time role, and either Golson or Hendrix has the change-up role which could gradually morph into the full-time role.

    Lou,

    I agree with you here.

If Crist performs to his potential the job is his. If he does not I think by seasons end one the younger guys could be the starter by seasons end or heading into next season.

for the record I expect Crist to have huge year. That along with a very good defense could see the Fighting Irish vying for BCS bowl championship bid.

Prior to spring practice, I asked this two-part question to board members: 1) who will start the 2011 opener at QB and 2) who will finish it?

The first 66 to respond had Dayne Crist 41 to Tommy Rees 25 to start the season. But to finish the season, the result was Crist 29, Rees 23, Andrew Hendrix 10 and Everett Golson 4.

Now that you have had 15 spring practices, including the Blue-Gold Game, to digest everything from the coaches and players, we will revisit the question. Let's try to get at least 100 responses.

    1. Who will start the season at QB for the Irish? 2. Who will finish the season as the starter?

Dayne Crist will start with Dayne finishing. I see a big year. Crist knows the offense better than any other player. What I saw from the blue and gold game was a very boring offesne. But I saw a very calm Crist calming receivers down who were in search for a leader (see michael floyd). Riddick was lost and ran the wrong routes on many occasions.

  • I agree that Crist looked very calm in the spring game, but I'm not sure how you can say he was "calming receivers" -- I believe we heard him tell Cierre Wood to "chill" once... Then he proceeded to connect on 5 out of 10 passes for a total of 34 yards.

If I was an ND receiver, I wouldn't be comfortable with those numbers at all.

  • Crist
Crist - Barring injury. If long term injury, it's Rees until Hendrix is ready to go. Golson is worked in for the next two years, then he takes over.

    dheinen

  • Start- Crist
    Finish - Crist

Any injuries or second man in needed will be Hendrix

  • For what it's worth, in part-3 of the videos from Dallas this weekend, BK was asked about the QBs in 2011, and mentioned Tommy Rees first, then Dayne, then the two youngsters.

That may or may not mean anything, but I'm going to pretend it does :)

Crist starts and finishes. The tempo was alot better on OFF with him. If he gets injured I like Hendrix to finish.

star, seriously? Everybody sees things differently I guess but my biggest problem with Crist is that the offense NEVER gets into a rythym with him. He cannot throw on the run, hence he is not very good in this offense...he got hurt running because he ran not to get hurt.

Im not privy to the same observations has BK but IMO Rees would start and later yield to one of the younger guys...Id say Golson. Everett Golson did not change his pledge to ND from NC to sit behind Hendrix...sorry just my impression. When EG gets some experience look out...he is tailor made for this offense, he is the best passer and runner combonation. Yes he is a little short but tall enough for what Kelly wants to do...

    Rees to start

    Golson to finish

Golson didn't change his pledge from UNC to ND to sit behind Hendrix? Of course he didn't. Just like Hendrix didn't sign to sit behind Rees and Crist. Someone has to sit though.. and Hendrix is the best passer/runner combination we have. Way bigger arm and I would say more mobile as well..

Once again, Crist to start. Crist to finish (with Hendrix worked in.) Rees/Golson to watch all year.

    Cowboy Up!

  • NDguyFL, I think Golson is the more accurate passer by far and will pick up the offense much faster. Dont get me wrong, I like Hendrix but if he was that good he would have beaten out Tommy and not RS last year. We will see, I hope they both stay because you need more than one capable QB. Remember Hendrix was already on campus when EG decided to switch to ND knowing full well he would have to beat him out if he went there, thats all I was pointing out..
