irishjim,
My feeling is Crist gets the call, but with a short leash. Rees is the next man in, and from what I've seen in Kelly's history, he's not afraid to apply the hook.` Basically, those two are 1A and 1B.
It seems to me Brian Kelly really wants to get Golson on the field, but my feeling is Hendrix is the wild card who will be inserted at some point even in the opener, either to run the Leprecat or another package in a favorable situation.
I remember in 1980 the masterful job Bill Walsh did of breaking in second-year QB Joe Montana at San Fran. Steve DeBerg was the starter, but Walsh gave Montana packages in the red zone that resulted in success and gradually built his confidence. By the 12th game, he took over as the starter. I can see Kelly doing that with Hendrix and Golson if they taste success and neither Crist or Rees provide the all-around package or consistency he wants. That's not to say either Golson or Hendrix will be just inserted in red zone situations, or that Crist and Rees won't thrive.
This way, Kelly keeps a lot of options open. Crist gets that second huge chance in his career because he has the best combination of physical talent and accrued knowledge. Rees is a proven insurance policy in waiting for the full-time role, and either Golson or Hendrix has the change-up role which could gradually morph into the full-time role.

Prior to spring practice, I asked this two-part question to board members: 1) who will start the 2011 opener at QB and 2) who will finish it?
The first 66 to respond had Dayne Crist 41 to Tommy Rees 25 to start the season. But to finish the season, the result was Crist 29, Rees 23, Andrew Hendrix 10 and Everett Golson 4.
Now that you have had 15 spring practices, including the Blue-Gold Game, to digest everything from the coaches and players, we will revisit the question. Let's try to get at least 100 responses.
1. Who will start the season at QB for the Irish? 2. Who will finish the season as the starter?

star, seriously? Everybody sees things differently I guess but my biggest problem with Crist is that the offense NEVER gets into a rythym with him. He cannot throw on the run, hence he is not very good in this offense...he got hurt running because he ran not to get hurt.
Im not privy to the same observations has BK but IMO Rees would start and later yield to one of the younger guys...Id say Golson. Everett Golson did not change his pledge to ND from NC to sit behind Hendrix...sorry just my impression. When EG gets some experience look out...he is tailor made for this offense, he is the best passer and runner combonation. Yes he is a little short but tall enough for what Kelly wants to do...
Rees to start
Golson to finish
