Player Projection: Tommy Rees

The future of junior quarterback Tommy Rees at Notre Dame is still anyone's guess.

  • After his 4-0 record in 2011 I was a Rees supporter but after all the turnovers last season I feel that Hendrix should get the chance to start against Navy.To b the two biggest turnovers that ND.had were not Rees's fault the two fumbles on the goal lines against USF.and USC.

Fair enough. But how many did he have in the Michigan game? Wasn't it like 5 or something?

  • Dan you hit the nail on the head.... In a spread offense what use are you as a QB if you don't have the arm to stretch defenses vertically? or you don't have the athletic ability to threaten teams with your feet? The answer is simple....... NONE time for Rees to pick up the clipboard and red hat....

  • TR is a great kid, but someone else has to take over at the QB position. We need someone with a big arm to throw down field and the same person has to be able to run the ball if need be....spread the field and keep the defenses wondering what is next.....deep ball, screen pass, run play, QB keeper.....we have the players to drive defenses crazy. BK please release the hounds. GO IRISH!!!!

  • There is possibly one Notre Dame supporter (not counting family) of Rees as the starter for the 2012 version of the Fighting Irish football team. If that one person allows other QB's on the team to develop and play we'll be able stretch the defenses with downfield bullet passes, quick feet to escape pressure and designed running plays that attack the defenses.

Crist tried and failed (I guess...), Rees tried and failed (I think...), now it's someone else's turn - it's called next man in! But, the next man in has to play in games immediately and must play as a starter.

  • i dont want him to start but I would love to see him on the sidelines and most importantly getting a degree from Notre Dame we all make mistakes i cant help but like the kid, now with that being said i dont want him to start but i would like to see him be running out of the tunnel sept. 8 against purdue

  • He has got to go....let Hendrix or Golson play..in the long run we will be better off..if he plays this year will be a waste of time..

    BORGHI

  • I've said it before but here it goes again...legal issues permitting, Tommy will play a vital role in a 12-1 season for the Irish. He won't start but he will finish at least one important win for ND.
Most of his time will be spent on the sidelines but he will still be a major contributor to this team's success.
Yeah, I know he's built like a Chess Club member and is the slowest dude at the keg party but this kid has more football sense (player/coach perspective) than anyone on this site..staff included. He also has way more heart and balls than the guy he replaced...and you can talk all the EG and AH smack you want...Tommy set the bar at 8-5. Until somebody betters that, ...you get my point I'm sure.

  • Rees was there when they needed him but I can't believe your comment, "Rees is the best quarterback they have". Nothing against Rees but there is no way he can take the Irish to the next level.

  • I believe we have all seen all the upside Tommy has to offer this program and it isn't enough to win more than 8 games a year. His off the field trouble hasn't helped his leadership either.

My luck w/the Irish 18-6...GO IRISH!!!

  • We're all pretty aware of Tommy Rees' limitations. The problem is we don't know the limitations of the others. It's not a good situation when you're pinning your hopes on an undersized redshirt Freshman who's never taken a snap in a college football game. Then again, there's a poster on this site who was pretty much in the same position in 1966.

Don't you have to put all your hopes in a red shirt freshman sooner or later? If so, then why not now?

    irishEddie

  • Factor in his uncanny ability to provide a unique opportunity for the other team to win by turning the ball over, having a DII arm - and not being able to run the football and provide a threat to which this offense is predicated, and you're an idiot if you start him. We need to turn the page of this program and live and die with what has made this coach successful... the spread attack with a QB that can consistenly drive the ball upfield, extend drives with his head, his feet and his arm and we will all live less stressed on Saturdays in the fall! Should be pretty a simple task, no?

    GO IRISH!

In a word, no. First of all, there's no guarantee Golson will ever be the guy. Now, personally, I'm betting he is, but I've been wrong enough that it's not going to be something I'm taking to the bank. Secondly, later is better than sooner. That's why "not now." The word on Golson is that he was still digesting the play book. More time can only be beneficial with something like that.

All that being said, he may still wind up being "the guy," and that could be just fine. But it is not ideal. It would be preferable to have someone with Hendrix' resume ready to go. He's had two years of preparation, and has seen the field in meaningful situations. But, there are reservations about him, as well. For all we know, Kiel could be that one in several hundred who is ready to go from day one. Unlikely, but not impossible. All we have are questions, and not answers. We don't like what we've seen, so we're banking on the unknown. Basically, we're discarding a pair of deuces, and trying to draw to the flush.

  • Every time Golson plays, it looks like the others are the ones still digesting the playbook, while he is scorin touchdowns and making plays.

Don't need a "flush". An average hand will make this team much better than the "duces" we have been dealt the last couple years.

If we went by Blue and Gold game performances, Nate Montana would be starting for ND instead of West Virginia Wesleyan. Let's be honest about this -- Golson was running a dumbed down offense against a dumbed down defense, and he was being spoon fed plays from the sidelines. He has a ton of talent, and certainly could hit the ground running. But, the reality is that no one here knows for sure how ready he's going to be. They just know they want somebody not named Tommy Rees. Last year, many on this board were clamoring for Andrew Hendrix. Now, he's practically the forgotten man on the sidelines, and only an option if Golson or Kiel is not ready.

Hendrix did not give us an "average hand" last year, and there's no guarantee that Golson or Kiel will, either. I don't want to see Rees taking snaps any more than the next guy, but let's be honest about what we have going into next season -- "no idea." As I said above, ND has been in that position before, and thrived. No reason it can't happen this year, but there's little that can be done right now other than sit back with our fingers crossed.

As having been there before with not knowing what we have going into the season, can you say Kevin McDougal Ham?

I'd like to see something like that happen again (without the heartbreaking loss of course)!
