  • Let's see if we can get this up to 100 and have a little more balance.

I'm skeptical right now that Brian Kelly would start the season with Golson, but definitely can foresee him getting assimilated more into the lineup.

The tipping point will occur at the end of September. The Irish will have a bye week Sept. 29, after the games at MSU and at home versus Michigan, and at that point the staff by then should be able to make a judgment on what direction to head at QB.

  • GOLSON better be the starter or BK is going to lose the fan base and get Reese booed out of the stadium...Again I would rather live with mistakes costing us five yard penalties than mistakes costing us CRITICAL interceptions and fumbles! Golson can make up for the delay of game mistakes with big play after big play, Reese and Hendricks can't.

I hope it's Golson starting and finishing. I don't see anyway BK can allow tommy turnover to start or finish. time to turn the page, weather the mistakes by a young QB, and keep moving forward. Tommy was there for us in time of need, but he can not take team any further. GO IRISH

I understand everything you are saying. However, if ND is flip flopping QB's at the end of Sept or early Oct, then I just don't feel very good about BK and Co's ability to understand who has the most upside of the 4 QB's and being able to develop that individual during August. Golson is cleary the best of all 4. Give him the highest % of the reps and get him ready. Navy and Purdue is the perfect starting point for him. JMO.

  • Interesting reaction from many posters---there were two other threads recently
on this subject that went into, in some depth, Golson's achilles heel-- his inability
to read plays, set the formation and snap count, run a play and, eventually, be
able to audible into a better play depending upon what the defense shows him---
all of which constitute TR's strong points. It is extraordinarly easy to say "its got
to be Golson" and not understand, or even appreciate, the very real dilemma
we have---Rees has the science, Golson has the art and you need both (unless
the NCAA grants ND an unlimited amount of time outs per half this coming year).

So, I think Lou's second thread comment more closely approximates the reality
of what most probably will happen (which is not surprising), unless, by some real
hard work in the Lab, a la Toro's comment on another thread, and plenty of 7
on 7 work this summer, Golson becomes more adept at running the offense.

So, based upon the spring game and associated practices, I see Rees to
start in Dublin, with the staff working Golson in as fast as he can learn
to manage the game. I would have said Hendrix to start but his propensity
to throw "level one" balls where more finesse is called for holds him
back, again, unless he can alleviate this over the summer.

One interesting comment from Eric Hansen: based upon what he actually
saw in practices this spring (as opposed to what people imagined happened)
Golson does not show well in practices but certainly "brought it on" this Blue-
Gold Saturday. If this comment is accurate, Golson must step up his
approach to practices more than he has.

  • Rees first, then Kelly realizes his mistake, makes it easier to get plays in, and goes with Golson the rest of the way.

  • I hate to be the one to say this but....
Does the name Robinson mean anything.
How much of the "pro-style" offense did he know?
Hoke made it work.. Same should be done when talent presents itself, just EFFING make it work Kelly.
Snap count audible and everything else will come with game time.
Time to suck it up Kelly and just make it work!!! Gosh-darn it why are we still talking about this stuff.
Dump it down make it easier and run the offense. If Golson throws a pick or gets a lose so what. Not exactly like Rees is a flamethrower with the instinct and athletic ability of RGIII

  • The more I think about it the more I think it will end up being Rees starting against Navy. He just seems to be the only one that really knows what he's doing out there in terms of checking out of plays at the right times and into the right protections.

Who will finish the season as the starter? I guess I have to hope its Rees if he starts the season; if he starts but doesn't finish then it'll likely be because our season went poorly. But Kelly showed in the Stanford game that he wants to give a running QB a chance, and Hendrix seems to be a step ahead of Golson in his development, so I think it'll be Hendrix that finishes the season.

I disagree Lou....Golson is who they are looking to rise up and take the job plain and simple. He is everything they want in a spread QB. He is going to earn that job over the next 4 months by spending all of the time he can with the coaches in the film room learning the science of the game.
