  • WeAreND76,

If he does that for the next four months then the NCAA will coming because there is not supposed to be any contact between the coaches and players during the upcoming months. We wouldn't want that. And no matter how much time you spend in the film room, the litmus test is what you do when the lights are on for real during the game. That can't be simulated in film rooms.

I'll be surprised if Golson isn't in the lineup at some point this year, but I have my doubts that he'll take the first snap. Of course, taking the first snap didn't do Dayne Crist much good last year.

It'll be a rough year and Kelly will realize he needs to build for 2013 and get the QB some work

I hate to be the one to say this but.... Does the name Robinson mean anything. How much of the "pro-style" offense did he know? Hoke made it work.. Same should be done when talent presents itself, just EFFING make it work Kelly. Snap count audible and everything else will come with game time. Time to suck it up Kelly and just make it work!!! Gosh-darn it why are we still talking about this stuff. Dump it down make it easier and run the offense. If Golson throws a pick or gets a lose so what. Not exactly like Rees is a flamethrower with the instinct and athletic ability of RGIII

I keep saying this but no one is responding. There is no way in hell I believe a big time div 1 FB Coach cannot develop a guy like Golson and improve upon his weak points prior to Sept 1st. No one is disagreeing that Golson has these issues. Its making him better at his weak points that is the issue. It must be done. No excuses. If we are still hearing that he has these same issues come Sept 1, then someone is not doing their job. The kid is a talent.

That's not true Lou from what I was told. The players are allowed to voluntarily seek out the coaches during the summer and study all they want in their offices it just can't be mandatory. This comes from a poster on TOS that is from within the football offices and has been verified. He can sit with Coach Martin in his office and watch film and go through the entire playbook. This person states that a LOT is learned about attention to detail, "want to" and leadership at this time leading into fall camp. The other thing that is mentioned is while the coaches can't be at the 7 on 7's Kelly can watch them as they are staged right underneath the balcony of his office.

Golson looks great when the lights come on. It's the nuances of the offense that he has struggled with and there is ample time for him to put in the work to get those things mastered. I understand why you think Kelly holds off and inserts him a bit later. Kelly knows he can beat both Navy and Purdue comfortably with Rees at the helm. After the debacle to start last season he has to ensure they take care of business in those first 2 games and potentially bring Golson along slowly as of this point. However we know what Rees brings to the game does not always pan out in game situations. For such a smart kid(he truly is a smart football kid) he consistently makes the same dumb mistakes and showed it again in the Blue/Gold game. It's one thing to make mistakes as all young QB's do and then progress but he has not progressed from those mistakes "When the Lights Go On!" I respect your opinion and even understand your thoughts but we are just going to have to agree to disagree on this one my friend!

    WE ARE ND76

  • We Are ND76,

I'll check on this further, but I will say nothing makes me yawn more than summer reports of how people are looking in 7-on-7 drills. Every year it's the same report: Lather. Rinse. Repeat. Cut. Copy. Paste. Only the year changes.

I don't actually think we're disagreeing about what direction the program must move at quarterback. I think we all just want to see it happen yesterday, and that's not how it always work. I almost wonder whether this year Rees will have Crist's role. I could even see Hendrix potentially starting as maybe an early safeguard, Golson gradually getting assimilated, and then Rees being maybe the fireman if an injury occurs, just like Crist briefly was against USC last year.

The greatest template I saw of QB development was Bill Walsh with Joe Montana. In Joe's rookie year (1979), first-year coach Walsh didn't play him behind Steve DeBerg during a 2-14 season. The next season (1980), he gradually inserted him in certain situations — like red zone — while still apprenticing and digesting everything. For example in an early season victory, Joe was 4 of 6, with two TDs, specific plays he mastered. Then there was a game at Dallas that year where they lost 59-14 — and Walsh didn't even put him in. He didn't want to rattle him too much. By the end of the season, he gave him more to handle during a 6-10 season, let him run the offense, and started him in the final several games.

The next season, Joe took over and the 49ers won the first of their four Super Bowls. Walsh didn't overwhelm him, but instead gradually brought him into the mix. That's what I'm looking more toward with Golson, rather than just tossing him the keys and letting him drive into the major thoroughfares when he is just now studying for his driver's test.

I always respect your thoughts and observations.

Thanks Lou! I was under the same impression as you until I read that the other day about spending time in the coaches offices voluntarily. I agree with you about the 7 on 7's not being a tell tale sign at all just stating that they could be observed by Kelly since they were held under his balcony.

    C to finish.

  • After about 200 or so posts, I finally (to my knowledge) received my first "minus 1"
    for stating these realities:

    1) the people's choice may not be ready to lead the team against Navy
because as of the Blue-Gold game, he does not have the ability to consistently
communicate the called plays to his offensive unit, set them in the correct
formation, get the snap count communicated to all--including his center and
man in motion--and audible, if necessary.

That seems to be fact (however disagreeable and against the grain of
popular opinion it might be). His Head Coach believes this fact to be true,
so unless he improves in this area, he won't start against Navy unless
BK changes his assessment or goes totally out of character and
plays Everett with these deficiencies unfixed or only partially fixed.

    2) everyone and I mean everyone wants him to improve these defects
over the summer--problem is, the coaches can't touch him until August 5th.

    3) people who have actually observed practice have said (and
published for public consumption) that as of yet, he does not
practice well. This is another area he must make up his mind
that he will improve--otherwise, he simply will not show, in
practice, the improvement Kelly is looking for to start him.
    Hello? isn't that obvious?

In another thread, I suggested and elaborated on a
voluntary, no coaches present, full "flag football scrimmages"
as opposed to 7 on 7s to give Everett, Andrew, TR and
Gunner, but primarily Everett, an opportunity to take
his "classroom" playbook, lab simulation work into a
more realistic setting. The suggestion did not receive
much comment and those that did deemed it impractical
    but, that's o.k. too.

This thread is focused on who we want to start and
finish--and my choice, as is most others, is Golson.
But, I also recognize that me saying it does not make
it happen especially since the NCAA is not going to
provide us with numerous time outs to get plays set
and Kelly is acutely aware of Everett's need for more
    "science."

But, as they say, "no good deed goes unpunished."

Thanx HOW2WIN (my new name for you). Its just that as much as I want, hope,
dream that Everett starts and finishes and we go 12-0, there are realities that
must be faced. Once faced, they can be dealt with----obviously, if we on this board
know and appreciate the dilemma we have at QB (even Lou's question and
our answers connote there is a dilemma), the coaches, players and Everett
know the situation even more so and are doing something about it. Our problem,
of course, is having seen what has happened over the last two years at the
QB spot, we are skeptical that our preferred solution will come to pass. And,
that's o.k. too, since we are fans and they are the coaches. Be that as it may,
if TR does start and things do not change dramatically for the better, the board
will implode and all the "spirits" in the world will not drown our collective anger.
As IrishBob said, such is the life of an ND football addict.

  • I wish I could have seen the spring game, then maybe I'd have a basis for giving an opinion and not just my wish as to who will start at QB at the beginning of the season and at the end of the season.

From all of the posts on this thread, it sounds as if there's still some very serous questions about Hendrix and Golson being able to lead the team . . . which is really unfortunate. If BK decides he needs to start Rees in order for the team to win a couple of games, gain some confidence and momentum, then I probably couldn't fault him too much for that. I'm sure he's acutely aware of the ceiling on this team with Rees at the helm, and I'm equally sure that BK wants this team to be competing at a championship level just as much as we do, if not more. So if he starts Rees at the beginning, I can live with it . . . for a little while. If he doesn't start to work one of the others into the mix in a very substantial way, then I'll be hugely disappointed.

Anyway, Lou, my response to your poll would have to be:

    A, C

We're al just dust in the wind.

    KingSolomon

  • C and C

My concern is that Kelly gets too wrapped up in winning rather than WHY we won. First two games are easy, and we can't afford to waste them on Rees. For whatever reason, it doesn't seem like things are clicking for Hendrix, and Golson has 4 years. Kelly takes a chance and starts him against Navy, sees that he does great, and sticks with him.

This is my hope. If reality is A, A, we'll all need AA.
