Prosise Seeks Better Returns For ND

  • I was interested that Reggie Brooks was "wowed" by CJ's moves as a punt returner--he particularly focused on CJ's ability to make the first one or two defenders miss so that he at least had a chance to break free. Also,CJ does seem to have size and relatively decent speed, perhaps just the kind of hybrid defensive back-linebacker that Kelly is recruiting these days (Baratti, Turner, CJ, Shumate and even Badger).

To each his own. I'm not a fan.

I don't like his level of competition, I'm not impressed by his offer list (a better judge of a player's worth than stars) and I don't like his speed at all. He can return punts in high school -- that's great. But he doesn't do it against top competition and I question his much of an impact he can make returning punts against people who are faster and more athletic than him.

I cover high school sports for a living and I've seen a lot of kids return punts against bad competition that wouldn't be able to do it against Miami or Oklahoma. I have questions about how he'll adjust to playing against Notre Dame's level of competition, that's all. If he proves me wrong, then great for him. I'm not ashamed of being proven wrong.

His coach can say he's a stud, but I cover coaches at 12 schools who say their players are studs -- that's kind of their job. I'm allowed to not be sold on someone, just like you're allowed to be 100% sure he's a stud. We'll see how he pans out, but I have my doubts.

Also, I don't call you names. If you disagree with me, then state your case. We're not children -- leave the clowns out of it, eh?

I get the point about taking what coaches say with a grain of salt, but here I think you have to keep in mind what the coach actually said. If he had said,"C.J is an unbelievable player and neither his film nor his measurables do justice to his talent" I would agree that that would be meaningless coming from the player's own coach (and to the extent he said that, it is meaningless). But the coach was also saying that C.J. had not attended many of the combines, etc., so he may not have been accurately or fairly evaluated by the services. That part is objectively verifiable, and, if true, tends to indicate that C.J. is a better player than he is rated. No reason to dismiss facts just because they come from a coach; if they are true then it doesn't matter who they come from.
