Punt Returners

  • Catching punts is trickier than one might think. Just ask the Northwestern linemen who tried it after practice.

  • Kyle Willimas (49ers) could learn a thing or two from those last couple guys.

  • Point taken Dan, but jug machines make footballs do all kinds of unnatural things and while they do make it look very difficult, these are guys who have never had to judge a ball in their lives.

As receivers, corners, or what have you, any potential punt returners should be a guy who has seen and understands spin and trajectory of punts.. lt's like telling your DH to play centerfield or your center to bring the ball up the court. To those who do it, it's easy, but when it's unnatural it can look impossible. It shouldn't be difficult for a receiver to judge a ball in the air when that's all their job entails.

However, I understand what you are trying to get across; just thought I would throw in my twocents

I was saying that more tongue in cheek. I certainly think a 195-pound athletic receiver should do a better job at catching punts than those guys. Just thought it was a pretty funny video and was looking forward to the inevitable "Let's go sign up No. 97 at least he won't have to fair catch it" responses.

I guess I would have to agree NDGUY. Growing up playing many different sports, I found it easy playing them, maybe because things from one sport help in others. I played outfield most of my life playing baseball, which probably made it easier for me when returning punts and kickoffs. Damn! Maybe I should have played soccer. I could be kicking FGs on Sundays right now. biggrin

Beat me to it. I was gonna go with "Looks like he had more return yards in that 1 practice then we did all year"

Think Louis Nix could return punts? It would take 4 guys to being him down and he could fall forward. That's at least 4 yards a punt which would be terrific consider that was our yearly total minus MF3's return in the bowl game. Ha!

  • I think if we're going that route I would choose recent walk-on Kevin Carr. At 6-7, 325 pounds he's the biggest guy on the field and without having to worry about anything but learning to catch punts. Perhaps we've stumbled upon the solution to diminishing punt returns across the nation?
