QB Tommy Rees, LB Carlo Calabrese Arrested

Maybe this was part of his increased mobility training

He may need to work harder on that. I read on espn.com that not one of the others who jumped the backyard fence and fled was caught!

In Ree's defense, he was concentrating on holding onto the ball.

Rumor has it Rees threw a bottle at the cops and missed by 15 yards....

    Was it intercepted?

To everyone saying that this is worse than Floyd's DUI...please stop. Just stop. DUI is a lucky break every time you don't kill yourself or somebody else. So while it's not murder or rape, it's a stupid senseless crime that costs millions of often innocent lives. This was a kid running from the cops at a college party. Yeah the headline of "assaulting an officer" looks horrible but he tried to pull away from the cops grip and tussled with him. Not like he slugged the cop or went Menace II Society on him. Just because we wanted to minimize Floyd's transgression so he could come back and don't feel the same about Tommy is no reason to equate DUI to undearage drinking and resisting arrest.

Likewise, it's a moot point that TR is gone from the team. He deserves that punishment and probably the likely dismissal from the University. That's the fine line you cross between underage drinking, to fleeing/disorderly, to felony resisting arrest. He goes from losing his spot on the team to losing his top-flight education. But the catcalls for good riddance and goodbye Turnover Tommy? C'mon just because he can't throw a 20 yard out doesn't mean it isn't mournful that a 19 year old kid is going to lose a first rate education based on one stupid decision which hurt nobody but himself.

    Excellent post!!!

I have never been a Tommy Rees fan, but being happy about this incident because it changes the QB race is just sad. This stupid drunk incident of foolishness can affect a young man's whole life. Yet, some of you only care about games being played. That's just lame.

I'm not sure if any of you people drank in college, but at San Diego State, we majored in drinking, and as a result I have seen many drunk incidents like this happen that don't amount to any serious crime at all. A kid gets scared because he is under age, runs, gets caught and is embarrassed and starts to tussle. Once that happens it is considered assault on a cop, which is just silly. I don't know what happened last night, but I seriously hope it does not cost Rees a chance at getting an ND education. And even if ANY of you don't want him to be the starting QB, you shouldn't either!!!

Obviously, the assault on an officer is a major red flag, but in reality, it is often no more than a push-back, which means it can get reduced. Always depends on the overall circumstances. However, use of pepper spray suggests some degree of resistance or abusiveness, above the ordinary. Just trying to connect some unknown dots here, but it's hard to see how this is going to end well.

I agree 100% Ham. This could be a biggie when it comes to battery charge and resisting arrest. They frown on that in Indiana!

There are SO many questions for Notre Dame Football in 2012 and this just adds a few more question marks. As a coaches son, young Mr. Rees should know the score...

  • When the police arrived they likely would have given the party goers a lecture about loud music and told them to go home.

Tommy did not use bad judgment when he ran, resisted, etc. He panicked because he was intoxicated and drunks (especially new drinkers, if that was the case) have little common sense.

  • I truly feel for the kid...I see it this way...He's in the ND family. He has been a trooper and was put in the position of playing way too early in his career...he had some flat out great moments and incredible highs..as well as all the shortcomings that are well documented...He came to a pressure cooker of a place for qbs ...he was off campus prolly letting off steam and having a few too many...wrong place / wrong time...he is 19 / 20. Being an ND player does not change the spots on a 19 yo kid. He is a kid . kids make mistakes ...and they learn from them.. I am sure he will . With good support of those that love and care about him he will be just fine. ..My prayers and thoughts are going out to his family , freinds, teammates and coaches...I am sure they are hurting for him too.

What makes Notre Dame different than other places is its culture of support and open heartedness to others in need.

    Tommy Rees is in need.

Please join me in positive thoughts and actions and words for Tommy and CC. Thank You.

  • I've been in the camp that Rees' chance to start in the fall was virtually nonexistent anyway, regardless of this morning's news.

I've thought that Kelly was letting it play out in order to keep everyone happy and competing. Now, that charade will be dropped, in my opinion. Even if Rees wasn't arrested, it would have been enough that Rees' name showed up in the national media for being drunk at a party. I think Kelly would have acted on that alone.

But police officers, warranted or not, have now arrested Rees under a number of charges, the worst two of which are resisting arrest and battery (a felony). I don't care what the chief of police is saying about it not being truly violent, cops don't take kindly to any force directed at them. As a sign of how serious this truly is, Rees is still being held without bond. They are still deciding how aggressively to pursue these charges.

If Rees gets off, it's a black eye for ND nevertheless. The national media will talk about favoritism. That's not good for the program. If he doesn't get off, it's a black eye for ND. Moreover, it makes others wonder if Kelly expects saints on the football team when Kelly announces that someone other than Rees won the QB job. That's not good for recruiting. It would have been so much better if Kelly could convincingly say Golson is the QB on merit rather than having this behavioral element now.

I admit I'm heart-broken about how Rees must be feeling. Here we are, only 9 months removed from being heart-broken about how Crist must have been feeling. Both are good kids who meant very well and handled their adversity with courage and honor. And now Rees has to navigate through this. It's such a shame. I will pray for him. That's all I can do.

  • Is this dead week or finals week at ND. I know he has shown bad judgement, but I have sons' in college and after finals, or midterms they to had a few drinks, or more. They are both of age now but I bet they weren't the first few times they partied, and drank. I think everyone that goes to ND is highly motivated to make really high grades, therefore a lot of pressure, then you throw in a starting QB position on top of that, with others putting pressure on you to party. Wow it's a wonder more problems don't happen. I truly hope TR can stay at ND under some conditions, and finish his last year of education. This I am sure is a life changing situation, it may be the best thing that could ever happen to him if he handles it the right way. One bad mistake should not ruin a young persons life.
