Question for the board

  • Is it possible that PSU could get the severely penalized by the NCAA?
    As I recall, SMU received the death penalty largely because of "lack of institutional control."
    I've read the Freeh Report, and in my opinion this is text book "lack of institutional control."

    It is lack of institutional control from a common sense perspective, but the NCAA rule book has no language covering these types of issues. In my mind, this is much larger than football or athletics in general, and should be handled by the proper the authorities: the federal justice system, and the civil court system. The NCAA is in over its head on this one. Just my opinion though.

    Agreed. This seems far too big for the NCAA to not screw up, especially given its generally unsatisfactory history of handling disciplinary actions.

  • The best argument I've seen ties the PSU issue to competative advantage. By covering this up, recruits kept coming and donors kept giving. If they knew about the scandel, they may not have done so. Therefore, the cover up gave PSU a competative advantage.

    NCAA has clear rules on competative advantage and this line of thinking may be a stretch, but it's the best I've seen so far.

    Statement by Bob Williams, vice president of communications

    “Like everyone else, we are reviewing the final report for the first time today. As President Emmert wrote in his November 17th letter to Penn State President Rodney Erickson and reiterated this week, the university has four key questions, concerning compliance with institutional control and ethics policies, to which it now needs to respond. Penn State’s response to the letter will inform our next steps, including whether or not to take further action. We expect Penn State’s continued cooperation in our examination of these issues.”
