Rees, Calabrese miss trip to Dublin

Notre Dame announces the punishments for the two players arrested this fall.

    Dan Murphy

  • Seems like an appropriate punishment for incredibly stupid decisions.

Let the Golson vs Hendrix debate commence.

    SleazyB

  • Fox starts anyways. No big deal.

  • Floyd's situation was handled correctly as were the Rees/Calabrese situations.

Let it end here and now.

    FBFAN

  • Probably a good idea with all those pubs in Dublin.

I think it's appropriate. I would like to think going to Dublin is a big deal, so this has some teeth in it, but doesn't destroy their season. Could it mean that Rees will lose a starting role that he might have had for this game? Idle speculation. We'll never know.

  • "Rees will have to compete with three others at quarterback with one less week to audition. "

Now I'm curious!!! How long are the suspensions Dan?

    hcwillie

  • "This conduct was inconsistent with my expectations for our football program – especially our veteran, team leaders. Carlo and Tommy will not travel with the team to Ireland and can attempt to climb the depth chart following the conclusion of their respective suspensions.”

In my opinion, the real telling part of Kelly's statement is the second sentence, particularly the part that states "...can attempt to climb the depth chart following the conclusion of their respective suspensions." Taken at face value, a reasonable person can infer that Tommy won't be getting starter reps in camp beginning on Saturday since he has zero percent chance of starting in the opener. Further, the fact that "he can attempt to climb the depth chart" lends credence to the thought that Tommy won't be handed the job immediately upon the team's return to the US.

If everything I've heard anecdotally over the summer is true, then Everett Golson will be our starting QB not only vs. Navy, but for a good long while. He has apparently put in the time in the film room this summer, and really squared away his academics.

  • Good move . Also makes it easy for BK to dump Rees .

    spenna

  • Kelly had to send a message to that locker room. No more shenanigans. Rees and Calabrese compounded poor decisions with abject disrespect and violence. Floyd did not compound his mistakes...college kids are gonna party, but kneeing an officer and threatening an officer (like some extra from Jersey Shore) is unacceptable!
    Golson...do your thang, swag up!

    ciggles

  • this was handled great exactly what i was hoping for they are both on the team D. Fox is better than Carlo and we all know that we got 2 better qbs than tommy i enjoy having both of um on the team im still happy they are still wearing the blue and gold Golson go get your job!

  • I think its a fair punishment. Now lets see how this QB thing turns out.

  • Pimpi,

Agreed that the most telling statement was "can attempt to climb the depth chart" after the suspensions for the Navy game. Now it's going to be up to someone to not just take the position by default but wrest control of it through daily consistency in practice and then productive output in games, which is as much about minimizing bad plays as it making good ones.

Had it just been a citation for underage drinking, the usual slap on the wrist would have been probable. But even though the charge was dropped, when you get into a physical altercation with a police officer, or a verbally threatening one, there has to be some consequences.

  • This is the best news I've heard all week aside from the US winning medals at the Olympics! Golson take the throne and don't look back! I'm a huge Golson fan by the way...haha!

    rsharman

  • I won't deny this is very interesting news. Especially as it confirms my belief that BK takes team discipline seriously.

As it looks likely EG will start, and am highly anticipating to see what he can do at game time. My one fear is that we have to undergo yet another year of a young QB "learning the ropes". Another year of "what the hell" moments, the sort of things that come from inexperience.

However, there is one thing about EG gives me hope that this won't be the case. Every now and then, there come football players that have the "execution" gene. The ability to do something as easily on the field as during practice. It's a rare ability, but some people have it.

Golson's high-school career was so prolific (came close to national HS records) with him throwing for 11,634 yards and 151 TDs. Ridiculous. More interesting is what he did his freshman year. As a true freshman, he threw for 2,765 yards with 35 TDs and 11 ints with a 62 comp percentage.

Maybe, just maybe, Golson has that rare ability. The ability to "just do it" when it counts.

Thanks for the update, Pimpi. That's great news about Golson, and the kind of information almost all of us have been hoping to hear.

  • I have to admit that I have laughed every time I read that Carlo warned the police about his people. Years ago, I was a high school assistant principal for discipline. My sense of humor got me through a lot of tough days. And kids seemed more willing to listen because I could laugh on the way to discussing the seriousness of the disruption they had caused and suspending them from school.

I have to wonder, has any one said, "Carlo, never tell anyone outside the family what you are thinking!"?

More seriously, I agree with others: BK is very skillful, very professional in his handling of discipline.

I think its really sad to enjoy a young mans misery. Whether you want someone else to be the starter is irrelevant to you being ecstatic that he "is gone for the season." He is a young ND man who has tried his best and made a poor decision . I hope most of us can remember that he tried his best as a freshman and sophmore and not wallow or gloat in his misery.

I also hope you never make a mistake in life and am assuming that you never have. I wish I could say that myself.

  • I just did a back flip bc I'm so excited! And I can't even do back flips. Haha but all seriousness this is great for the program. Tommy did good his first season but just isn't a Notre Dame quarterback. Time for Everett and Andrew to fight for the spot. I'm now even more excited for the Notre Dame and Purdue game that I'm going to that I won't have to see Tommy play. Go Irish!!
