Rees, Calabrese miss trip to Dublin

  • I am happy for our young QBs to get an opportunity and I think it may be easier for them knowing the team now 'needs' them to perform at a top level. However, Tommy Rees is the only player on the team who has started a game at QB. He has won a game at the LA Coliseum, he has won a game at Yankee Stadium, and he has won a Bowl Game against Miami. He also has the highest QB rating at ND since they started keeping that stupid statistic. If our new, rookie QB spits the bit and looks confused and unsettled on opening day, I would much prefer to have Tommy Rees coming in to settle things down. Ditto if there was an injury. I have a high degree of confidence that Everett Golson will take charge display his athletic power and I don't expect a repeat of the Demetrious Jones debut, but having Tommy Rees sitting in South Bend on opening day can't be looked on as anything but a negative.

You're absolutely right, Psdo. I can't imagine a coach in the world who would say he'd rather play the opening game of the season with no experienced quarterback on the roster as opposed to one, regardless of was starting.

  • Agree with 2daniel6, the suspensions are a sad day and not one for us to pile on a young man.

I am looking for a new chapter this year. I believe Tommy - like most of us - has shown good judgement and bad - in his teen years. We go to ND to mature. Its trite to say, but true. Its not where we start but where we finish.

I am rooting for whoever is qb ... and I am rooting for TR to learn what he needs to learn so that he too can be a great ND graduate.

Good move . Also makes it easy for BK to dump Rees .

while i'm not about "dumping" rees, IMO, he should probably transfer where he has a real chance to play, ie: a pro-set type of offense etc. he's a good kid who made a bad decision. made a few of those myself back in the day. but he does not have what bk is looking for to run the spread. period.

Run the ball. Stop the run. You win, or lose, up front.

  • In my humble opinion, it is never a good day when a kid's life (and remember, we're talking about a kid, here) is possibly turned on its head because he didn't use his own. The fact is, Tommy should not, and probably will not, transfer to another school. Let's be clear, at barely 6' 2" and 210 lbs. soaking wet, he has almost no chance of suiting up for an NFL team.

What is also clear is that Tommy isn't stupid. He has two years of eligibility left and can work his way back into the good graces of the coaching staff, play a back-up role on the team, graduate with a degree from Notre Dame and possibly be a coach on some level - maybe even at Notre Dame; Ron Powlus' route, so to speak.

I, along with many others, was frustrated beyond belief with Tommy's play last year. But as Lou has mentioned in previous articles, not all the blame lies with Rees. He made a stupid mistake - with a mug shot to prove - and now he has to live with what can only be described as a tarnished legacy as a Notre Dame quarterback. But he's a nice guy, a level-headed kid (this situation excluded, of course) and I wish him the best.

Let us not forget: he came in as a true freshman and won four in a row to close out the 2010 season, including a bowl win against the dreaded "Convicts." I'm not ready to skewer any student-athlete who gets into trouble ... unless he's a damn Trojan - but that goes without saying.

I believe tommy will transfer and could be one of the best qbs in one of the smaller conferences. If he could limit the turnovers he would be a solid quarterback. Not elite but solid. And 6'2" is plenty of size for an nfl quarterback but that's not what's keeping him from getting there. It's his lack of mobility inside the pocket and poor arm strenghth. Honestly I would be surprised if he doesn't transfer no one goes playing their first two years to not playing at all especially a kid like t Rees.
