Report on BK's Speech in Chicago

  • Hi all,

Tonight, my wife and I attended the Notre Club of Chicago’s Rockne Athletic Banquet. Brian Kelly was the main speaker.

For any avid reader of ND football sites, BK didn’t really say much that was new.

He discussed the QB situation, and said nice things about each QB. He did say that Golson, all too often, would throw a beautiful pass on one play and then would fumble the snap on the very next play. Regarding Kiel, he said he will be very special one day, but he is quite raw. Kelly made rather generic comments regarding Rees and Hendrix.

He discussed how they will line up Eifert all over the field. He also discussed CBs, safeties, and LBs rather generically. He said that our D-line and O-line were the real strength of the team, even with the absence of Lynch. Regarding Lynch, he said the same line as earlier. To succeed at ND, you have to have your heart and mind in it, and Lynch didn’t.

The one newsworthy note was that he really tried to set expectations for an 8 win season, and he strongly stressed the difficulty of the schedule.

All in all, it was nice to hear from BK, but if you follow ND football sites closely then you wouldn’t have heard anything new, except for maybe the stress on 8 wins.

As an aside, I talked to a recent ND football player for a while at the event. (Who was AWESOME, btw!) I asked him if he thought “Kelly was the guy.” After he stalled for about ten seconds, I said you don’t have to answer if you don’t want to. And he seemed grateful for the respite. Take that for what it is worth.

  • magogian,

Thanks for sharing that report. Isn't it amazing how you can go from "You don't come to Notre Dame to be 8-4" in year 1 to setting 8 wins as a bar by year 3?

But next to "emphasize how good the recruiting is," one of the edicts in Coaching Manual 101 is to downplay expectations before the season rather than over-promise and under-deliver.

If you set expectations low but do better than projected, then great coaching is credited. That's helped Mike Brey win three Big East Coach of the Year awards over a five-year period, plus some national Coach of the Year recognition the past two years. Seldom is much ever expected of the program, but from January to the first week of March you find yourself saying, "How the heck do they do it?"

If you set the expectations high and you don't reach them, then the conclusion the average fan makes is, "Hmmm, they must not be doing a good job of coaching." Ask Lou Holtz about this.

  • Thanks for the update, magogian. Good stuff. The eight wins bit was very interesting. A lot of players I've talked to that recently graduated think 6-6 or 7-5 is more likely.

That's interesting. At the track, one of the best rules of thumb is to not go to trainers or jockeys for handicapping advice. Not sure if that's applicable to football. I only wish these players were influencing the guys who set the over/under lines in Vegas.

This is an excellent point, Lou. I have to admit, when I first read magogian's report (thanks, BTW) I was a little disheartened by the 8 wins comment. Then I read your post and really started thinking about it, from BK's point of view.

If your the head coach of a college football team, it makes sense to come in and say all the right things: gonna compete for championships, can't have rebuilding seasons, we have to win right now, etc. You've generally got a year or two to stay in the good graces of the important stakeholders of the program. Once this honeymoon phase wears off (I think it's fair to say BK's has completely worn off), you're more responsible for meeting expectations. So, setting expectations for 8 wins signals, to me, that he is confident we will get at least 8 this year. Since this number is pretty consistent with what I was expecting, anyway, this isn't so depressing. I know if it were me, and this were my budget, I'd build some "cushion" in there.

  • Was this player a player or does he watch from the sideline? Too many variables to read into that answer. I never liked my coach all of the time and sometimes I disagreed with him.

  • Kelly could say he'll go 3-9 for all I care in the spring, all that matters is what happens in the fall. All I know is if he throws down another 8 win season (regardless of expectations) his fan support will drop like a brick in water.

  • He said RECENT, which means he is not on the team anymore, it could have been anyone. Pretty vague statement. Ian Williams seemed to buy into Kelly, and wish he could have played four more years for him.

I've had friends that have played for Kelly at GVSU and CMU and loved him, and remember how mad the players at Cinnci were when he left. Figures, he comes to ND and the players aren't sold on him. Sounds like the playes wouldn't be sold on anyone, prima donnas if you ask me!

  • I gotta figure if Kelly says we're only going to win eight, it's because he's been reading this board, and realizes that's all he can get with a sucky quarterback.
